Default Fiberglass repair

Ok, so the new boat is not perfect. There's a gouge on the keel that I believe I need to fix before I put a keel guard over the top of it. I think I can use some Marine Tex to fill it in, good as new, but I wanted some opinions first.
Is Marine Tex my best option here, or what? Also, what needs to be done to prep the area, first? Thanks for the help. The quarter is supplied as a scale reference. I'm not giving it to you just because you help me.
