Shad Raps are my go to medium depth crank baits... and lately been buying a lot of X-Rap Shads... Not a fan of the DT Cranks... And color and size choice is entirely dependant on what kind of water you are fishing... Here in KY, I use teh crawdad or copper flash colors in teh spring, and then transition to tennessee shad, mystic shad, and black silver as the summer presses on and into the fall... i also recommend blue gill patterns on lakes with no shad, but good bluegill populations.

Here in my lakes bluegill is the main forage. The DT6 in the green olive pattern is a real killer bait. I also do well on the larger perch pattern Shadraps.

DT's are my favorite bait from Rapala, hands down. Best colors in the big water of Erie have been the Helsinki Shad, Shad, Silver/Black, Hot Mustard and Olive Shiner. The X-raps are also a great bait to draw a reaction strike. Ryan

Here's my opinion on some rapala baits. DT cranks - I've sworn off them. 75% of mine have broken. Skitter pop - works, but not my favorite popper. I'd go with an XCalibur Zell Pop. Skitter walk - these things are horribly hard to walk. Get an XCalibur Jimmy or a Lucky Craft Sammy. both of these walk great. x-raps - this is a great jerkbait, although probably not the best summer lure. X-rap shad - This is another good one. Great little crankbait, and it suspends. Personally, I'm waiting for the new Rapala Crankin' Rap to come out at ICast. Rapala's normal crankbait (like the DT), but only plastic instead of balsa. BB

Shad rap, Original floating minnow, jointed floating minnow, x-rap. Probably my favorite rapala baits, I've caught tons of fish on the shad rap, a jointed minnow especial!

I have to agree with BassBoss on the jointed floating minnow. I have caught hundreds of bass with it, either on a straight retrieve, or twitching it on the surface. I also love fishing X-Raps as a crankbait, especially the deep diving ones. I regularly throw them out trolling, and catch all species with them, including crappie and bluegill. I used to fish Fat Raps a lot before they were discontinued. That was a sad day. I own Husky Jerks, Skitter Pops, Props, Walks, and Subwalks, but have yet to catch a fish on them. I'm still hopeful though...sure the Finns can't be lying.

About 70% of all my cranks are Rapala Shad Raps of any type ( Original, Shallow, Jointed, Glass, RS ) are proven fish catchers, actually Iīve caught more fish with Shad Raps than with all my other cranks put together. Original Floating & Jointed Minnow Fat Raps of any type ( Deep & Shallow runners, Glass, Rattling ) are also very good lures, unfortunately most of them are discontinued. You can still find them at e-bay but man, they are getting really expensive ! Risto Raps are also good, but they are discontinued. Most Rapalas are good lures but not everything is milk & honey, if thereīs such a thing as a bad Rapala itīs got a name ----> Long Cast Minnow ( donīt buy it ! ) |

I love using Husky Jerks and X-Raps for smallmouths, and since you're from Erie I assume you're probably catching a lot of bronzebacks on that Big Lake. I like them because I can use them both comfortably on both my spinning and casting rods. They're great in the spring and early summer, but after that you usually gotta go down deeper up here.
