				 | Trailer Hooks?

i have been hearing alot of buzz lately about trailer hooks. I have been fishing since I was a kid and never knew they were available. I hear nothing but good things about them. I am looking to outfit my spinnerbaits with them but don't know which ones are the best? Also, is a red hook better? And what size in relation to the actual hook on the spinner should I use? Thanks |

I believe you will get plenty of people who say they never use them and a bunch who say they never go without one. For me, it is based off where I am using it. I know they help with short strikes, but they also help me get snagged. The debate of a red hook is, in my opinion, a question of confidence. If you feel better with one, then use it. Otherwise, I don't know that color matters. I really don't think it matters on buzzbaits since it is all reaction. When I do use one, I try to match the size of the bait's hook.

I'll just say that last night I felt like an idiot for not having a trailer hook on my buzzbait after losing 2 fish. I was throwing it around wood before and I'll usually not use one where it will get hung up but I was too lazy to put one back on. If I'm fishing somewhere that it won't get hung up I will (should) always use a trailer hook. On top of using them on wire baits I have even started playing around with them on other baits. I use the Gamakatsu G-Stinger hook on several different things. I need more time to give a review of how much difference it makes. |

My local tackle shop only carries the 2/0 trailer hooks. This size works well with all of my spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. -Mark |

I use the SK premier plus spinners that come with a trailer hook. Every fish that i have caught, other than a couple, have been on the trailer hook.

I tend to look at it as "how the fish are biting" rather than hard and fast rules. If the bite is real light and they are just nipping at the bait, usually a trailer hook will help bring them in. I have even started using trailer type hooks with other baits too like senkos (t-rig/c-rig).

I've tried trailer hooks on spinnerbaits and buzzbaits off and on for a bunch of years. Maybe it's just me, but I've never been able to tell any difference one way or the other.I always have some with me, and just bought a pack of 2/0 trailer hooks the other day, but I'm not completely convinced they are all they are cracked up to be.

I like using them when I can. If I'm using a spinnerbait in deeper water with little weeds or wood they work great. As others have said, they do increase snags in marginal water. In weed clear water, they are a no brainer. I estimate they inprove hook ratios, 60%. I have used smaller stinger hooks on jig and trailer rigs. This works well on deeper ledges in lower weed areas. Dave |
