fishing pond today..need advice..please
I will be fishing a farm pond later today. Its been in the
high 40's and 50's all week and today it is over cast.I know that ponds warm alot faster that lakes and what have you.The pond is clear mostly with a nice green tint to it I know in the middle of the pond the guy has put the family christmas trees in every year and they reach one side of the pond to the other in a single line.Where should I start?shallow, deep or the trees?lipless crank bait, lizards, spinnerbaits, plastics? Thanks as always in advance remember its a high of 50 and overcast Saving my sanity ;D in Ohio Denny |

I would work the wood with all the items you mentioned, plus a Fluke or PNJ. If it's deep enoguh try approximately 10 feet of depth, other than where you have wood, or other cover. Lizards |

Re: fishing pond today..need advice..please
With you being in Ohio, I would have to assume that the water temp is somewhere around 38 to 42 degrees. If that's true, I would recommend trying a 1/8 oz. black hair jig with a small pork trailer. Fish it slow, and try to tick those branches in those christmas trees. Bites will be real light, so pay close attention to your bait & line. You said the lake is clear, so also use a spinning rod with a fast tip and 8 lb test flourocarbon line if possible.
If that isn't working give a small crankbait a try. Choose one in a crawfish or baitfish pattern with a big lip to it. Try to fish it near any rock you can find and let it bump the rock then pause in between for a couple seconds. Good Luck, and remember it's tough fishing this early in the year when water temps are still that cold so don't get discouraged. |

You also might try a suspending jerkbait-the colder the water, the slower you want to fish it. |

Re: fishing pond today..need advice..please
I went Sat. and fished the line of christmas trees, with
a madman craw on braided line...no bites,I threw a black jig..no bites. I threw a lipless crankbait(chrome) had two strikes at it no hook-ups.I threw a spinnerbait.I threw a bomber craw.I fished all these baits a slow and did different retreives and just the two strikes on the lipless but it didnt matter to me I had a blast anyway.I chalked it all up to practice. ;D. Thanks again everyone who gave me advice and thanks for asking Denny, Ohio |

Hey Denny-were you using a Rat-L-Trap? If so, right out of the package the hooks are notorious for being dull. I Never throw a trap without either changing to sharper hooks or at least using a hook sharpener on them. It can make the difference between landing and missing a fish.

ya, when i fist started fishin traps, i lost the first 10-15 fish that bit. then i finally sat down and figured out that the hooks were dull as hell. the other thing, if you werent using a trap, you may have just hit a dense patch of weeds, and that can feel an awefull lot like a fish. i dont know how many times iv done that in the ponds that i fish. anyway, better luck next time |

Braid with a mh fast action rod, equals poor hookups I've proven this more than once :-[ Lizards |
