Default Hook Sizes

This is kinda a noob question. What hook sizes should I use for t-rigging? I usually use a size 2/0 hook size with a seven inch worm, but the worm wants to slide down the hook. Is the hook too big?

Okay thanks a bunch, it has been kinda frustrating, sliding the worm on the hook every cast!

Generally, you want to use a bigger hook for bigger plastics, up to a point.

For a general 7" worm, I use a 4/0 Gammy EWG or a 5/0 Owner Twistlock (they seem a bit smaller than a similar sized EWG, so I go a size bigger).

You're worm shouldn't be sliding down the hook on every cast. After a missed hookset, or maybe getting caught on something in the water (weeds, a rock, etc.), but not every cast. This happens a lot more often with torn up worms. If the head of the worm is getting torn up, put a new one on. Also, check out this video to make sure you're properly rigging the bait.

I like the wide gap hooks for my plastic trigging. For plastic worms and lizard I go with a 3/0-4/0 in the 5-7 inch length worms. For 7-10 inch worms I go with a 5/0-6/0. For pitching creature baits like beavers into cover I use a heavy wire 4/0-5/0 wide gap hook.

If you are having issues with the bait sliding, use some super glue on teh hood shank at teh head of the bait, or better yet go with the owner twist lock hooks.

I will use either a 3/0 EWG, 4/0 EWG, 5/0 EWG, or 6/0 EWG depending on what bait I am using. For a 7" plastic worm I usually go with either a 4/0 EWG or 5/0 EWG. I agree that your plastics should not be sliding down on every cast. What style of hook are you using? This can have a lot to do with your worm sliding down the hook.

Hook sizes sort of go hand in hand with the size plastic one is throwing,if tossing smaller baits ike frech fry or 4 in ringworms then 2/0 /30,if large 8-12 in worms 5/0 .
Something like a gary yamamoto senko is thicker takes a wide gap hook,a mr money minnow weightless can even use a 7/0
And if one trick rigged one could use a small number one circle or octopus hook.
So thickness of bait, length how used and water clarity somewhat enter in the factor.
Generally t rigged the 3/0 to 5/0 would do most.A hook with more bend in the notch prior to eyelet generally has less of a sliding problem, you might also try a slider head it has a screw coil to attach the worm.

I hope so too! If it turns out that you still have more problems after watching the video let us know and we will see if we can come up with some more ideas.

I'm using Owner twist lock cps 3/0 and 4/0 on craws and worms the days of your bait not staying on the hook are over.

Here's what I use:

4-5 inches = 3/0
6-7 inches = 4/0
8-9 inches = 5/0
10 inches and above = 6/0

Mostly I end up using 3/0 and 4/0; always Gamakatsu EWG for me.
