Default Crappie die off

Hi guys. Went fishing this weekend on a local pond I've been fishing for years. It's a very large pond with bass, sunfish, bluegill, crappie, bullhead, and pike. Anyways saw thousands of dead crappie all along the shore and floating but no other dead fish. Saw a bunch of healthy bluegill and sunfish and caught a few nice bass. Thought this was vary strange. Why would only one species of fish all the sudden die off in such huge numbers?
