Is there such a thing?

Posting this question to those who use hard bodied jerkbaits. I often fish hard bodied jerkbaits, especially in early spring. My preference is a 4 to 5 inch 1/2 oz shallow bait. The issue I have is that virtually every suspending shallow jerkbait runs between 4-6 feet. This often causes me issues, as I am running afoul with grass at those depths. What would be perfect would be a 4-5 inch suspending jerkbait that runs only 2-4 foot max depth. I so far havn't seen such an animal. Is anyone aware of a bait that fits this profile?

Are you using flouro? Maybe you can use a light weight mono. It might keep your lure up a few inches.
Check out Tackle Warehouse. They list their baits as Shallow Medium and Deep diving. The shallow diving goes from 0 to 3 feet deep.

You might also try trimming the bill. Never know you may hit upon a winner....

(or maybe over the winter, try and modify a jerkbait to your specs. AC shiners for instance run pretty shallow, partly because the balsa is so light, but they have a pretty small lip. I wonder if you weighted one to suspend, how deep it would go. Probably not too deep, 2 1/2, 3 feet? )

Rapala Flat Rap... this one is a slow rising floater that can be weighted to rise even slower or even suspend.

I'm using 12 pound mono and copoly depending on the rig I'm using.

Sort of a contradiction,grass meaning warm water,suspend jerkbaits that are for cold water.
Problem is you desire to run a jerkbait in that space between top and grass ,quite a few will run in that say 2 ft none being suspend models and you really dont want them to get a good look at it just keep it in the zone so one suspend strip generally does it.
Many years ago prior to ever seeing grass topped had same problem,as it seldom made it up all the way so made this not hard at all saw bill out replace with another for shallower running epoxied in,did it about 15 years ago still holding.

Well they work in hot but work better normally in cooler.A good deeper one will work on a july suspending bass that is by an object or in hiding rap on the door.I just find less uses for them later in 90f water.Up north suspect they would work fair year round.
And we often add a suspend strip to a shallow runner to get it deeper never a thought to is it a suspend bait,in a sorts yes.
But my on thought pattern doesnt make it a statement that rings true 90 percent of the time . just my own thoughts other people other water get different reactions

There are fewer effective choices for cold water and a suspending jerkbait is one of those choices. Warmer water allows more choice in effective baits, but don't under-estimate a suspending jerkbait in many situations... especially if you dial up the aggressiveness of your retrieve.

I carry five rigged rods on my boat and one always has a single tail grub tied on, another has a hard jerkbait.

Keith, there is a pretty simple solution that is a variation on lilmule's suggestion. Instead of replacing the lip just heat it at the base with a lighter and gently bend the lip down with a pair of pliers. Take a look at the angle of the bill on a Minus 1 or Footloose and you will see what I mean. I've done this several times with a jointed Cordell Redfins to make it run shallower. Like I said, simple solution.

the luck-e strike mega bass knock off does not get very deep. about 3 ft will kill it most of the time.

This is a secret that a lot of guys here on Table Rock do to Redfins to turn them into wake baits. You might ruin a few baits before you get it right but once you do it's lights out.
