				 | What to fish for?

Saturday is supposed to be nice and I wana go fishing. I will, providing I dont have to work no over time. I've never been much of a winter fisherman so my question is "what kinda fish are biting this time of year? Tips, strategies, any advice is welcome. As of right now I think i will cast a few deep water craks, and some jigs at some smallies, and anchor down and see if some cats are hungry. |

When you anchor down, try the float and fly while waiting for the cats, it may just surprise you. It's origin was for smallies.

Welcome to the forum! One bait that really shines in cold water is a suspending jerkbait. Just fish it slow with small twitches and lots of sitting still. The colder the water the slower you want to fish. That said, though, fishing something fast is always worth a try. Another bait that works well this time of year is a RED lipless crankbait. I read someplace just recently that this tie of year the ig girls are needing iodine, and a red crawfish has a lot of it so red is a hot color. Also, in cold water it is hard to beat a jig. I have also had success fishing finesse baits like a dropshot or a shakey head.

I'd be working hard body jerk baits mostly, especially off points. But like Reb said, a lipless crankbait and a jigNpig would round out my other choices. Also, in cold weather, a chatterbait retrieved slowly just above the bottom of the lake can be a killer bait!

Thanks for the advice. Im taking my 2 boys ages 5 and 6 so I think we will try out some crappie, so they can learn to cast and retrieve..then some jigging for smallies and hopefully find some cats too. Gona mix it up quite a bit to try and find out whats hawngry haha. Didnt think of the chatterbait, thanks. |
