deep crankin 7:1 and 6:3????

ok you guys help me with the math. I have all 6:3 and 7:1 gear ratio reels. I’m getting a rod customized (extended handle) for deep cranks. It seems to me that once my crank hits the bottom the crankin slows down….i don’t have to crank as fast because it’s bumpin bottom. It seems as though a faster cranking reel gets it to the bottom quicker…..help me understand.

It might get you there quicker, but it's harder on the wrist and forearm. A lower ratio reel is easier to retrieve such crankbaits. Like driving up a steep mountain. You shift to a lower gear in your car. Stick to the lower ratio reels with deep crankin. You'll be doing yourself a favor.

Deep cranks have a lot of resistance. Low gear ratio reels will give you more torque.

If you can crank a big deep diver all day with a 6:1 or 7:1 reel, go for it. I bet you'll be worn out. If it works for you though, there's nothing wrong with it.

Shawn according to the very scientific book Joedog just got......your 20+ ' crank will only get to its max depth 1.2134 seconds faster than a 5.1-1 ....hardly reason enough to fight a 7.1 all day and risk needless fatigue.

4/7/1,or 5/1 cranks,fast for spinnerbaits,topwater or flipping.

I use a 5.2:1 reel for cranks down to 10 feet and a old Shimano 5:1 for the bottom dredgers. Makes life a lot easier on the old wrists.

I'm good for about 5 casts with a high speed reel and a big bruiser like a series 5 or DD-22. I don't care what kind of rod you have, a high speed reel will flat wear you out real quick. A low GR like a 4.7:1 or 5.4:1-for those big boys I like the 4.7:1-makes it MUCH easier to fish these baits. I can throw a DD-22 with a 4.7:1 all day with no problems. I guess my point is do yourself a favor and get a low gear ratio reel for throwing the big boys. I guarantee you will be happy you did. If you are looking for a good reel that will not break the bank I throw a DD-22 with a BPS Pro Qualifier 4.7:1 reel and love it.

Many, if not most, crank baits have a "sweet" speed at which they run best and dive deepest. I believe many anglers fish them too fast. I like working crank baits with my Abu C series winch. 3.8:1 / 16"ipt.

Ditto that.

Used to have the same line of thinking as you till I tried a low GR reel. Makes a WORLD of difference. It's all bout the increased torque like BigB said.
