So a couple of weeks ago I defeated the monkey by putting a $60 Pflueger President / Cabelas Tourney Trail Split Grip combo back on the shelf after risking losing a finger while grabbing it when the doors opened. I even walked around with it for 30-45 minutes while I looked for other deals. But as I was wrapping up and headed to the checkout lane my adrenaline subsided. I realized I already have more spinning setups than I need, including this very combo I bought last year. I felt so good about relinquishing the combo that I sought out a guy I saw walking around with two different spinning combos in his hand. Neither of which were of the quality I had just put back on the shelf. I had a gut feeling he came looking for the President combo but arrived too late. I asked him and sure enough he was looking for it. I directed him to where I stashed the combo I had. You should have seen his face. I left Cabelas feeling good about not having purchased something I didn’t have to have. Plus I only really need the Tourney Trail 7’ as I moved it over to my older President for my main crappie rod. Cabelas blew them out last year for about $35 so I figured I’ll wait until that time this year.
So here comes Cabelas again with another killer combo. Shimano Solstace / Cabelas Tourney Trail Split Grip for $50. Dang it! I don’t need another combo, just want the rod! But I don’t think I can resist getting the combo this time. I love Shimano spinning reels and the Solstace is a step up from the many Siennas I have. Plus I can get that 7’ Tourney Trail I've been wanting. But if I move the Tourney Trail to my new President, then the Solstace will be missing a mate. Oh well. I think I'm going in fellas. Wish Me Luck! Or not… |

Hey hey I beat the monkey. I walked right into Cabelas, picked up a mix of those combos with different rods, air casts a cupula few times, chose the one I wanted, walked around to another batch of them, picked up a few more, and that’s when something came over me. That something said “hey, none of these combos even come with the actual rod you really want. Why are you buying it?” And then I even thought about asking a sales rep if he could swap out the rod I wanted from a President combo (that is no longer on sale). But I held firm and decided I really didn’t need to buy this combo after all. I then walked out of Cabelas with both fists high in the air. Victorious!!!
But I have to admit: I might just ask if they can swap the rods. Geez this monkey business is tough. |

Oh how true. My wife just called from work and said she wants to go to BPS when she gets off. I said ok and then heard the monkey in the background laughing! He is working with my wife to defeat me !!!! I guess I may as well give in.
