Hair jigs pay for themselves. Crankbaits as well. Crankbaits take so much time though.

Depends on what you are making. I recently started making my own spinnerbaits, and I think the cost of raw materials is less, no labor costs, and not only can I get combinations you can't find on the market I flat enjoy making them.

Making baits has nothing to do with money...... Its about the art... making rods, making nets, making whatever.. enjoy the personal pride in making your own lures! Chip

It's about saving the money, not making the money. If I can make 10 cheaper then I can buy them, you bet.

But I think it's fair also to point out, just getting into it, there is more of a "start up cost", you also don't know how the fish will react to them, so you might make 10 cranks, and only one of them actually catches fish. I realize anything will catch a bass at the right time or place, but you gotta remember the cranks that are bought over and over, and done so because they catch fish. If making your own is something you want to do, then great. But it could end up costing a lot of money for baits that aren't consistant fish catchers, therby costing you more in tourney's. Just a flip side to this, there has been a lot of baitmaking stuff posted lately. Do it for the challenge or the satisfaction, but don't do it for the money savings, it just isn't there, except on plastics IMO. Lizards

It isn't about saving any money. Its about putting the components together to make a lure that you want to fish. Sometimes someones idea of what a idea bait is alot dfferent than what most fisherman would think would be better.I am constantly modifying things to see what effect it has on catching fish. I aint trying to make money with this stuff. All I'm trying to do is save some. If they work, then I know I am doing something right. If I'm not, I'm not out 5-6$ per lure. Thats all.

I agree with Lizardsrule. Do it for self gratification and not for savings. For example. The spook is one of the better topwater baits at about 6 bucks and will almost put fish in the boat every time conditions are right for it. It's ready made and on the shelf. They have been proven just as other mass produced baits have been. If you are going to make your own then do it for the pleasure of doing it.

With all the crap I've made before for bass fishing, it is amazing looking back and realizing that almost none of it has worked worth a damn. The best two things I've ever made were a modified spinnerbait and a fly made out of soft plastic for stocked trout.

I make my own spinnerbaits and air brush paint a lot of my own crankbaits. Is it cheaper ;NO,but it sure is a great way to pass the long cold winter nights. It also gives you the opportunity to custom tweek lures for exact situations. Many times I have practiced for a tournament then went home a made a spinnerbait with the colors and vibration or flash that I felt would work best. Some of those times it got me a check and others it didnt. When you build a bait you learn a lot about it and its uses.Great hobby. Fish2win
