Default boosting gas milage

lets face it gas is not going to return to the $1.50 mark ever again. i own a 73 jeep cherokee-2 door- all time 4x4 with a 360 carberated moter. with the 35" mud terrains on it i get and impressive 8 miles to the gallon. and you wonder why i don't drive it more often huh??
i am not looking to boost it in this gas chugger as i don't drive it alot..

i do have a 2005 ford ranger 4x4 with a efi 3.0l v-6. packing stock 235-70-15 tires that i drive alot. when i bought the truck new-in august- it had 235-70-15 good year wrangler tires on it and bone stock intake.milage was a depressing 17 mpg after 6 months -prior to mods- it still was getting only 18 miles per gallon. the mods i added were a k&n drop in cold air intake filter, a mass air sensor, and a set of 4 touring tires. the k&n filter i got at auto zone for $75 the mass air sensor is a vortecx-it's rifled-$125, and 4 new kumo 795 performance touring 235-70-15 tires. my milage jumped to 26 mpg. i now have 30K miles on the truck my average weekly milage is 500 miles or 1.5 tanks of gas. the milage gain is about 1 tank of gas every other month or $180 a year saved in gas. in 5 years thats $900 bucks...

think about it.....

I try to get better mileage for fun pretty much sometimes, the $ saved doesn't hurt either. Rolling resitance of different tires does make a big difference and you need to keep an eye on the air pressure. I run mine at or near the top limit for the tires, which is 44 on my snow tires and 52 on my summer tires. Driving style also makes a big difference with the diesel. Motor up hills, coast as much as you can. I just can't seem to keep it slow on the expressways and that really kills my mileage, usually set cruise at 75-80. That and short trips where the motor is not warm are really bad since the burn is not very efficient.
The guys over at TDI Club have competitions with their VWs.

VW Turbo-diesel jetta, passat, or golf. They all get about 45-50 a gallon, but you don't have to pay for the price of a hybrid. Unless you're towing something, these cars are the way to go, not to mention incredible acceleration and handling...

Those cars sound nice but I can't fit in them and be comfortable. I need something to haul the boat (truck, 4-wheel drive) that will fit my larger frame.LOL. My 96 Chevy is going to need replaced soon. The body and frame are in very good condition. I was wondering since the motor might need replaced if I should keep the truck and replace it with another motor? I get about 14 city and 18 highway.

Funny you should mention that tom. Most people push there rigs at WOT at all times and dont realize they could save some fuel by backing off the throttle some. I am one of the worst for drivin like a bat outta hell at all times. I have on occasions backed off the throttle and it results in saved fuel. Most rigs will still do the same speed if they are setup correctly when you back off the throttle some. The last few 100 rpms are neat to hear and see but using up fuel.

Zook,
I have claimed that my boat drains gas while going down the road.
Same as your's while sitting on the trailer.
Wish mine got 5 miles to the gallon, I'd be out there today. Well maybe not today (got a NASCAR race) to watch. Go Tony !
