Default What a disappointment..

Went fishing today (I go every day)

This guy that lives on the lake comes out and we talk about the bass fishing..
Then, I ask him about his largest fish out of the lake. He says 4lbs. I asked if he released the fish. He says "No, I eat all the big ones so that the small fish can grow big."

Man I was not too happy. My fishing buddies and I are trying our best to take out about 300+ small bass from this lake so that the population would loosen up and there would finally be more bluegill than bass in the lake , a reliable food source for trophy bass. And then this dude comes along and says he's gonna keep the trophy bass and cook them, while we want to have good fishing w/o all those 14oz'ers. Now, it's almost like I am working for the guy's food bass!!

What do you guys think? Would there still be big bass no matter, as long as there are plenty of baitfish?

Ya need to keep the bigger females in a body of water to insure a hatch of more frey that could possibly one day be a big fish. In other words keep the big ones and thin out the smaller ones, esp. if the lake is full of one size..JMO

Sorry to hear that. I went fishing last week and talked to a guy who said he fishes in the lake we were at as often as he can. He said he takes all of his catches home to eat including a 7lber. Yes, he violates fishing laws. He told me he got a ticket once for not having a fishing license. He depletes the resources but does not contribute to the preservation of them buy paying a few bucks a year. Well, he did pay a $60 fine he said.

seaphantom,
whether this one guy will make a difference will depend how big the lake is and how often he sucessfully fishes.

Just tell him that he should stick to eating the smaller fish and that eating bigger fish can pose a health threat to him. Why" Because bigger fish will have had a greater amount of time absorbing any potential poisons and toxins occurring both naturally and accidentally (via man). So all he's doing is poisoning himself.

It might not be true (it is in my lakes - high levels of mercury naturally occurring such that WDFW discourages eating big bass) but if you make it plausible enough to him, he just might stop out of fear.

And if he is fishing without a license I would not hesitate to call your fish and wildlife department. Do it however in a way he is not aware of you making the call. Good luck!

My lake is 50 acres.

I wonder how many little bass I have to throw out to make a difference, so that there can actually be more bluegill than bass in my lake.

I hope you aren't just throwing them out Either move them or eat them, but don't just throw them out I think that you have this notion in your head that there aren't any big bass in this lake. I can't guarantee you that there is, but I would bet a lot there are at least a few. Putting up a fish feeder would help if you really want to grow them bigger. But I also hope you realize this isn't gonna happen overnight. It will take a while for it to really affect the size of the fish too drastically.

50 acres is an awfully big body of water to be trying to thin the population out by angling, first of all. Personally, I feel that it is too big of a size to be worrying about stunted growth at all. Thats an awful lot of room for fish to roam around in, how deep is this water? I'm not sure that you're getting an accurate depiction of the true population in the lake...with something that big it can really depend on where you're fishing and what you're fishing with. A big fish is not so easy to catch in most normal waters. Personally, I would enjoy the fishing and try several different things and patterns to see what kind of fish I caught(with records kept) for at least a year before I went to throwing out fish.

The lake becomes 30ft deep at one point. In the middle, it's about 17-20ft. There is a shallow end, where it is 6ft in the middle.

I've caught at least 300 bass out of there, and only 3 were above 1lb.
I've used senkos, lizards, worms, jigs, rooster tails, poppers, and some other things.

Our sorry lake manager even admits that there are way too many small bass in there.

These two guys are going to go a large lake in SC to catch a couple of 20-40 lb flatheads to stick in here, so they'd eat up most of them little bass.

SP,

How old is this lake? And was it ever stocked, and if so when?

i dont think a couple of flat heads will solve your problem you would need a couple of pike or musky they will keep it under control
