Denny and me went north and fished Lake Anthoney. Water temp I am guessing is upper 40s maybe 50. Water was almost crystal clear, and you could see moss growing already. Got my first one on a spinnerbait in 3 ft of water, about 10 feet off the bank, it really hit hard.
Then went to flipping a bleeding tube and using 40lb powerpro(which i have discovered i really like so far, thanks lizards and others) anywho , felt the bass pick up the tube several times and missed both times I was setting the hook. We then ventured around to a area that was full of laydowns, I mean one after another of willow trees that the wind blew over, and started seeing bass. They looked to me like they were in a pre-prespawn pattern, just cruising for potential areas to spawn. They all had one thing in common, they were in 3 feet of water and near the tree tops, rather than in the timber. Denny got a nice one on a creature type bait, I kept throwing a rogue, wondering if it was too early for that up here in ohio. I had several follow the rogue and one actually just nudged the bait and turned away. Thats when we both realized we could see dozens of 14 inch bass in the timbers, and started pitching at them. I tied on a lizard, watermelon red fleck(thanks reb) and started watching the bass. I acutally went right over the back on one bass, and he never even flinched, or tried to hit it. So I threw out an dead sticked it, and started feeling bites. For some reason if you worked it to much they wouldnt hit it. When I threw it out and dead sticked, the back would eventually turn around and then go hit it. Being able to watch this , I often could sense when to set the hook rather than actually feel the bite. But with that powerpro I did feel them chomping away at it, and ended up getting 5 tonight. FELT GOOD! Saw one tubby of a fish I bet over 5 lbs cruise right by the tree I was working , with two males along side. I got some new polorized glasses and boy they sure do the trick, esp. when the sun was out. It ended up getting real grey and dark out, and I ended up not being able to see the fish anymore, so went back to the spinnerbait for the last dozen casts..all in all a killer day for april! ![]() |
