				 | Buzzbait Reel

Hey gang, I'm looking into a new buzzbait reel. For some reason I have a heck of a time throwing a buzzbait without getting a backlash. Granted, part of it is the nature of the beast because they aren't the most aerodynamic thing to throw with that bade acting like a sail but was wondering what y'all use.

Shimano Calais, 5:8:1 but would prefer a faster retrieve rate sometimes. The dual blade buzzbaits I use get up fast, and you can crank them slow. So I usually use a bigger weight, without it falling or needing to burn my wrist out. For example the buzzbaits I use are usually 3/8 or 1/2 oz, but I have no problem getting them up quickly or moving them slowly. The same weights in a normal single blade you really have to crank to get them up, and keep them up. So I get fewer backlashes because it's a Shimano, right PNJ , and mainly because I use the heavy weights . Lizards

Rebbasser, They had an 7.1:1 Extreme reel for $49.95 today at bass pro shop.Lizards, good news,I am not ever going to have to bash Shimano again. If you have been listening to what is happening with the new Shimano Curado's, there is no need for me to preach any more. P N J |

Reb what type of line are you using with buzzbaits? I use power pro and don't get them. I get them when using mono. I use power pro with toad type baits also. I really don't think the braid is too much of a factor unless the water is very clear. Bob

Reb I use the same reel I use for cranking my speed spools; granted I use buzzbaits sparingly, but it works fine. I don't know if there is any truth to this is that you really don't want to really "burn" buzzbaits on the retrieve.

I try not to burn my buzzbaits, rather just keep them going slow enough to glide across the top of the water, and every now and then do a pull of the rod tip to make the buzzbait "scatter" and splash, to remick bait fish moving when hunted on top. |

I'm not so concerned with getting it in as I am getting it out-making a cast with that sail for a balde without getting a backlash but still getting some decent distance. Appreciate the input!

Reb, I am not one to promote spinning reels , but depending on the weight of the lure and the conditions your throwing , it might be the ticket. P N J |

Per our phonecon of Saturday, I'll get the 200BSF to you so soon as we can meet. However, there's another approach that might help if the 'Rado doesn't. Perhaps the Magforce feature found on the Daiwa reels would solve, or at least ameliorate, the problem. I'd recommend the TDA150H or the Black Widow II (NOT the earlier BW, a much cheaper reel.) Both these can be had for about a hundred bux and there's a dealer in Alabama that offers free shipping for orders over 100.OO. You might have to add a couple of bux worth of items to make the cut, but you'd save Texiz sales tax AND gas. If a higher speed retrieve is essential, there's a new series Rado (199.95) with 7:1 retrieve, but heavy! There's also the Daiwa PTA(?) with 7:1 AND Magforce, also kinda heavy, (I suspect, and not a great palming reel,) but less so than the 'Rado. We need to discuss line again. I've been thinking that a really heavy braid might be good, especially when the occasional and inevitable "overrun" occurs. Axiom: Always throw the heaviest buzzbait possible, consistent with conditions and patterns. Exception: Throwing downwind or in dead calm. F.Rod Last edited by FlyRod; 04-10-06 at 06:39 PM. |

I like it for the zara spook, it seems to pick up the slack between twitches rather well, its been problem free just like its ancestors, older versions of the same quantum 6:1...no problems yet(fingers crossed just in case) |
