Thats like asking worms, crankbaits or topwater. The three lines are totally different. If I used Berkley products anymore, it would be either the Trilene or the Fireline. I used Berkley my entire life, until the last couple of years when I switched over to PowerPro, and never went back, and Berkley has only ever made 2 BAD products IMO. Vanish(too brittle and weak), and Iron Silk(sucks all the way around). |

Bassboss is 100% correct, well 98% I don't like PowerPro at all!! LOL, stick with the Trilene, Vanish is flat out crap!!! I can't count the number of fish I have broke off with that stuff. I also don't use Brekley anymore, I'm strictly using Izor line now!!

I will never buy Trilene Again! I bought 3 new spools of XL, and all of them are crap! They snapped half way through a cast, lost 3 new lures, and a boat load of others. Very poor quality. I am thinking about switching to PLine CXX Mono or Stren original. I was never pleased with Stren Either. Fireline I like, but I fish clear waters, where it is impractical at times.

I can't seem to find anything about the three you menioned that I like. I use Yoshuri, Silver Thread, Pline, and Shakespear. I have tried braided on a few occasions, but it isn't one of my favorites. I have tried some others like the cajun red, its' ok, but I like Silver Thread, and Pline the most.

OK, have to put my 2cents in here. Stren, is, IMO, the worst line ever made. Talk about crap. Want a great(relative term) mono, Try Trilene Sensation. Stronger than XL, but smaller diameter than XT.

Lone Star, Why not break down your line choices based on application? By way of examples: Topwater lures, including buzzbaits and frogs: NEVER use a fluorocarbon line as it sinks easily, thus dragging the lure down and/or impeding the action. Ergo, a tough and abrasion-resistant mono, such as P-Line Extra Strong, is my choice for most TW lures, in 10-12 lb. test. I do, however, use a 30 lb. braid, either P-Line Spectrex or TUF-line, in hi-vis OR dark green, for buzz or frog baits. Were I to use mono for the latter types, I'd likely use 17-20 P-Line Extra Strong. Crankbaits and lipless cranks, such as Norman DDs and Rat 'L Traps: Again, I recommend either the P-Line ES OR P-Line Floroclear ( a "blend" that will help get the lure a tad deeper.) Most soft plastics, jigs, or any lure that is not in constant motion: A good braid, preferably a "High Visiblity" or Yellow type, with a pure fluorocarbon leader (See: DuPont website for the "J-Knot"). I recommend yellow TUF-line, in 20-30 lb test for most situations, and P-Line or Seaguar Fluorocarbon LEADER MATERIAL (not regular fluoro line). I use a leader of about 6' length. That allows me room for several re-ties before I face the daunting task of tying the dreaded J-Knot again. The hi-vis line will NOT spook fish so long as you use the fluoro leader. I used Trilene in the old days, and have no complaint re that brand. Be mindful, however, that there are several types and choice thereof hinges on application. I DO NOT endorse Vanish OR Vanish Transition, there have been issues with those. Fireline is "OK", but there are better braids out there. Lone Star, a word about knots... The knot is the critical component! I'd recommend that you use the Palomar for virtually ALL lure attachment, whether for braid, mono, fluoro, or cofilaments. You MUST tie each knot with utmost care and attention to detail, to include wetting the line (see: Saliva) constantly as you tighten the knot. Failure to do so will, sooner or later, cost you a lure and/or a bass. True, it's difficult to pass doubled line through a hook eye, especially in tests much over #10. To overcome that, simply pass the end of the line through the eye, draw several inches through, then pass the end back through the eye...voila! LS, I may have attempted herein to instruct in constructing a watch when all you asked was "what time is it." I did so because I suspect you are a "newbie" and have much to learn (we ALL do, NEVER stop learning!) At any rate, if you wish you may PM me and I'll be happy to help in any way I can. Have fun, catch bass, and, above all, be safe and considerate of other fishermen and the environment. FlyRod |

All I can say and will say P-line is the all around line for all applications. Just need to decipher which one for each presentation your doing. All other lines have failed me on more than 1 occasion.

Fireline for me. Power Bass try fireline with a 2ft. leader of 20lb mono or flurocarbon in you clear water. You can put the two together with a double uni knot. Catches the most spookiest fish in the lagoon down here.

Best mono IMO is defenitely cajun red. Have pulled 4ft alligators clear out of the water and have pulled up 100lblogs from a foot of muck on the 14lb line. This line has low stretch, handles well and is at a good price, plus it will not break unless there are lots of nics in you line (like any other mono.)
