Default Gander Mtn.

So how does Gander Mtn compare to BPS? Theres one coming to central fla soon, and its about 1/2 the distance that BPS is. So is it still owrth the trips to BPS or might I just as well go to Gander Mtn?

Smaller. Depends on the store for how the fishing dept. is stocked. I have one right up the street, weak fishing dept. But I go to the one near Lake Erie in Toldeo, OH. They have a great fishing section.

Just depends. But it will be NO Bass Pro, I can guarantee that.

I havent been to a Bps I have been to a cabellas right near the Michigan and Ohio Border. Cabellas is giant compared to our Gander Mountain.

The fishing area (tackle) is around 10 aisles. About 3-4 are soft plastics. 1 is books, 1 is cranks, Then the others are lines spinners, ice etc.

The aisles are fairly short maybe 15 feet long or so. If you need just a few things it will probably be alright. Their Senko prices are higher than the local guys shop however.

I am going to swear that Gander Mtn. is just as good as BPS, but that's prolly b/c I work at Gander . Our store, Greenwood IN, has quite a bit of fishing product but we lack a large selection. In other words, we have all styles of baits and maybe 5 or 6 choices as opposed to BPS having 12 or 13......Nice place to work....Our Guide Series brand name stuff is really nice for the price.

Anyway, in short, Gander's nice but not the size of BPS.

TT,
True that. Gander has good stuff just not as much as BPS. My mom lives down the road from your store across from Smock golf course. I visit your store every chance I get. What section do you work in?

TackleTester, that is a real shame then, because I live in Franklin, and that was the one I was knocking. The selection is adequate, but I have been to other GM's with much more. Sorry for the knock, I still go there, frequently by the way.

Yeah I heard about that in Lake Mary!! The one I visited up in Toledo, OH was excellent at least in freshwater category, I imagine they'll have both down here!

GM, nice but no BPS. TT, hope you get them sponsoring you while your working there. But instead of making the drive to BPS, why not order "ON-LINE"

I ahve been to a huge Gander Mtn in upstate New York, that had an excellent fishing selection(they also had a 10 gauge I wanted), andhave been to a Gander Mtn that was tiny but had good products and usually I get better service there than Bass Pro.

Eh no harm done War.......I wish we had more stuff too. The GM in Duluth, MN has like 3 times the fishing selection, but ours has many of the baits I use so it works pretty well....Plus I can ship stuff in from any of our other stores....That's really handy....

Lizards, you have to fish professionally to be sponsored by GM....I was bummed to see that b/c I was having thoughts of a massive discount when I first got hired...lol...Anyway, I have to work tomorrow so I need to get some sleep.....Take care fellas

Ummm...shipping for some of the stuff costs quite a bit and my parents drive me there for free.

Katy Mills BPS has three times the selection of bassin gear that the local Gander Mountain in Houston has, but due to the loction, we go to Ganders. My only complaint about Gander's is the fact that they tell me they will order something for me and I never see it. I will check in with them from week to week and nothing, no one knows anything about my order??

Otherwise, nice place.

BPS does charge a lot for shipping but there are plenty of other places online to shop. Tacklewarehouse ships for free on orders over $50.
I've got two BPS's near me and they never have the baits I fish in stock. Gander Mt in Fredericksburg could be better. They opened 2 years ago with isles of walleye and muskie gear???? Not a lot of those toothy fish in VA. We do have some but very few people fish for them. I fish against the fishing manager who sponsers some tournaments. He's limited in what he can sell. Another place called Galyan's opened with the same type of stuff a while back. It's out of business. Dick's has taken it over. Not much selection there either.
IMO the big chains are run by corporates who don't fish and the managers are stuck with tackle they can't sell because of regional differences and preferences. They also don't support your local custom bait makers. So I try to stick with the local stores as much as I can.
If you are ever running up or down 95 just north of Richmond there's a shop called Green Top on Rte 1. Much better selection of baits but are limited on discounts and it has a very good hunting section too. It's rare that they don't have what I need.

Speaking of gander mountain. I just made a trip to one where i live in Coldwater, Michigan. They have a huge fishing department and there service is great. Get this they actually hire people that know what there talking about. Also gander mountain has a lot of the soft plastic lures in there own brand that actually work as good as the name brand stuff for half the price.

The Gander Mtn. I shop at has a fishing dept. manager that is female and she knows her stuff. They are advertising for a part time fish dept associate and when I get back from vacation if it's still open I'll apply. I needed some keel rollers for my trailer and she ordered them from another Gander in Michigan. They arrived when she said and I only paid $1.97 for each. I also got an 8 rod soft holder for $5.99 one other time. She told me about all the rods they carry. Most not at the one where I shop. She said the instore rods they sell are now being made with GLommis blanks. Don't know if i should believe that but maybe someone can shed some light on it. I am not familiar with one blank from another. Their selection isn't the biggest but if they have it in the system I can get it. I have to travel over an hour to get to a Cabelas and a BPS is about 5 hrs away so Gander gets a lot of my business besides Dick's and sometimes Wally world. I also shop the local tackle shop where I live. Plus I order from the web alot.

Bob

Gander is pretty well respected up north. However, I'll drive to a Cabela's or a BPS when I really want to stock up. Don't need to worry about them having the selection I need. Gander fails a lot of times to be honest.

My local GM is much smaller than BPS but carry a nice selection and a decent size fishing department. I order online from BPS and Cabela's and also hit my local Dicks Sporting Goods which has some nice sales.

bassinbob....our guide series rods are not made with gloomis blanks....i dont know where she came out with that one....they are made by pfleuger and they are some sweet rods......The new Ultimate Titanium rod is an 85 million modulous blank...That rod is unbelievably sensitive....I like the Guide series stuff almost as much as my st. croix's...key word being almost....lol..

Not as good because the rotate seasonally. Depends on the season as to whats on the shelves... BPS is loaded up 24/7/365.

I have BPS, Cabellas, and GM in my town. BPS is by far the best.

GM In sugarland is my pick. I hate having BPS and Cabelas branded stuff shoved down my throat as soon as I walk in. Their stuff is OK but I fish shimano reels and brand name rods, the lures are a different story but when I see 12 aisles of BPS rods and 10 feet of g-loomis and all-star like Katy Mills, I really get a little depressed. After saying that-my wallmart Cherrywood has landed more fish than any other rod I own--you know what they say about opinions. BPS is good for woman watching though.

Just found out were getting a Gander Mtn here today. We have never had a good outdoor store. How old do you have to be to work there?
