My lake is very weedy and shallow. There are weeds growing to about 1 foot from the surface and many floating weeds covering the shoreline. Do you have any tips on what to look for and what lures to fish with? What would you do?
I've seen a few people pull out nice bass with what looked like a Senko rigged wacky style. What hook should I use and what color Senko should I get? Can I find the hooks at my local place or do I need to go somewhere for fishing only? TUBES! I hear a lot about them. Which kind should I get if I get one? How do you fish these? Thanks. Julien |

Where the weeds are within one foot of the surface, you could use super-shallow crankbaits, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, topwaters and a variety of soft plastics.
Where there are surface weeds, try topwaters, such as the buzzing frogs or hollow-bodied frogs, rats, etc. In this case, have a rod rigged with a soft plastic. If a fish blows up through the weeds and misses the lure, quickly toss the soft plastic into the hole just created by the blowup and let it sink. You could also use a heavy jig or heavily weighted soft plastic and try to get it to punch through the weeds so you can fish it beneath them. Tubes can be rigged Texas style with a slip sinker or an internal weight. In more open water they can be fished on an exposed-hook jighead, the head being internal or external. As to wacky rigging, I don't use that technique.

J-soft plastics rigged weedless and weightless would be my first choice-a senko-type bait or a fluke type like a Zoom Super Fluke would be my baits of choice.
Colors-watermelon, watermelon/red, green pumpkin and red shad are tough to beat. I've caught more on watermelon and watermelon/red over the years than probably any other color. Wacky rigs-I use a Gamakatsu Extra Wide Gap finesse hook, but I have also caught them wacky rigging with an offset shank worm hook and an EWG worm hook, so you can use what you have. Tubes-wrong guy to ask. I'm working on them, though ![]() ![]()

These lakes can be hard to fish at times, and that is an understatement! T-rigs with heavy weight, to get through the grass. I use a 3/8 oz bullet weight, and a watermelonseed brush hog. Look for laydowns, stump, and other structure. If there is not any, find dropofs, ledges, points, humps or other depth changes. Bass will relate to these areas, especially in lakes with alot of vegetation. Manns -1s sould also work, and burning rat-l-traps right above the grass should be productive. Spinnerbaits, fished almost touching these weeds, should get some ish, and of course buzzbaits in the morning, along with other topwaters.

Try baits that will pull the fish up to the surface so the fish doesnt run way down in the weeds. Any weedless lure should also be good. I would try some topwaters and spinnerbaits.

Cast it out, let it settle, then work it with gentle twitches of the rod tip.
