What is the proper way to fight a bass?
So with a wacky rig you don't just let it sink and jerk it? You actually have a 30 second pause without jerking? Thanks. Oh yeah, one more thing. Lately I've just been using monofilament line that my dad used to use. What are some good 10 - 12 pound test mono lines? I hear alot about ande. |

On fighting the bass, the most important thing is to keep a tight line, don't let them have any slack to throw the hook, on the other hand, you have to play them out, don't horse them in so that the line breaks. If one jumps, put your rod tip close to the water.
Ande, Trilene, stren are popular lines, 10-12-14-17-20 lb test are what most use. |

i use a heavier line because i fish in some sort of cover, i use 15lb. i usaully play the fish a little bit,but i generally horse the bass out of the cover. i fought my 4.62lb bass for about 2 minutes,my longest fight ever. just keep tension on the line and ,when using crankbaits and topwaters, keep the rod tip low to the water, and also move the rod sideways and back, sideways and back, do that a couple of times to hopefully get the second or third treble hook stuck somewhere in the fish.

Good points, I'm not going to add to already great answers, but I will add my line preference. Try some Silver Thread AN40.

Thanks guys. What is playing the bass and horsing the bass? When you say move the rod to the side and back do you mean jerk a few times or what?

playing the bass is letting it tire out, then retreiveing it,horsing is not giving it a chance to fight.

I started out with stren and then moved to trilene, right now use trilene and power pro braid. I tried the cajun red and it works ok, but already replaced it with braid for spinnerbaits and some top water.

Horsing the fish, means, skiing it to the boat rotfl. I prefer to play the fish as little as possible, with the exception of any baits that have trebble hooks on them. I would definately get some new line if your using your dads "OLD LINE". The main thing is to keep tension on the fish(as already stated by JB), after you have caught a few, you will get the feel for when they will want to jump. If you feel them rising up towards the top, then ease up on the tension some, and lower your rod tip into the water. This will allow the bass to re-adjust himself to go back a little deeper. More fish are lost on them jumping out of the water once they have been hooked, then just about anything else. It's awful purdy, but real dangerous on letting the fish off. I once in awhile when worming will reset the hook. However don't do it a bunch, I've sat and watched my dad lose a lot of fish, because he keeps resetting it all the way back to the boat, and lets off the tension too much while reeling down the slack he just got. In addition it can open the hole from the hook, which again allows more of a chance for the fish to get loose.

lizards,
for practice purposes only, pick a outing on the water and get a mindset that every fish you catch, you will practice playing it out, back and forth over and over at the boat..especially using crankbaits. This will teach you a gentler approach to babying a bass that is barely hooked with rear trebs in its mouth only...I did this years ago and after a few days of practicing, you really learn to relax and know the characteristics of their dives and pulls once they see the boat.. Now on the other side of the coin, like flipping a plastic or spinnerbaits etc, I like to cross their eyes and get them to the boat as soon as possible. But I think in the long run your crankbaiting hookset to hand release ratio will go way up..it did for me! |

tension is your best friend a tight line rarely loses a fish.. on the hook set always pull in one direction. i like to get them away from any nearby struture as soon as possible. bass will wrap ya if he can. never reset the hook- these aint musky- your drag setting is the important thing tight enough you can pull it out of the reel but not locked down- only time i lock the drag down is when fishing the frog in the weeds- the most imortant fightin is either near the bank or at boat side. the bass will surge not might surge WILL surge. i hold the rod below the reel with one hand and lip the fish with the other unless it is a dink then i just hop him in to my hand straight from the water..
when using cranks a drag setting that is loose enough that a bass will pull drag is good but not too loose as to pull on hook set.. zooker

Awsome. That really helped. Thanks zooker and JB.
With the drag... So with bass you want a loose drag? Can you please explain it again? How loose? With crankbaits I should play the bass. That is pulling the bass in with the rod (not reeling in) and then reeling the slack?*(but keeping tension on and not letting slack?) Spinnerbaits and Soft plastics I should just reel the bass in and not play it? I'm sorry if I'm a pest. Thanks.. Julien Last edited by jooleyen; 10-16-06 at 07:53 PM. |

you're not a pest at all. i like my drag tight enough on a baitcaster so that when my thumb is on the spool and i turn the reel handle,it should barely move. on spinning ,a medium drag setting is good, but use light wire hooks on spinning, and make sure that they are razor sharp. when fighting a crankbait bass, set the hook down to the side, not hard, just a pull, and let the bass tire out before starting to reel it in. with every thing else,i like to get it back to the boat as soon as possible.

That cleared it up. Thanks Skeeter.
Also, on my baitcaster when line is being pulled out and the drag is in use, the line and reel together make a very high pitched dink dink dink noise. Is that normal? |

no,not really. i would clean it and then re-lube it. if you dont know how to do that, see if your local baitshop cleans reels,if not, there are a couple online guys that do it. i think pig n jig cleans reels also.

Never Mind. I really can't explain the noise.
