I only have 1 spinning setup and it's a light action Ugly Stick thats 5'4" with a Pflueger President Mini spinning reel. I don't really like using it for bass fishing because it is too light and has too whippy of a rod tip, I cant set the hook well.
My dad offered a trade of fishing polls, and he has one Berkley rod called a Berkley Select or something like that. He also has a 6'6" Ugly Stick. Both of the rods have the same reel, which is a Shimano Sienna 2000. http://www.fishusa.com/tackleshop/ca...6EE99B519&fx=1 One of the reels is bad and needs to be fixed or replaced with another reel. If he buys a new reel he would give it to me. The reel would probably be around $30. Which rod should I take, and what do you think is a good reel for the $30 price range? Thanks. Julien. |

You don't say much about either rod, but I think a 6'6" medium rod with fast tip is a good general-purpose rod for bass fishing, coupled with 10# line.
I don't know about reel brands, but if I were limited to $30, I might think about a store brand (Dick's, Gander, Cabela's, BPS, etc.), hoping that you might get more reel for your money with a store brand and having a handy place nearby if you have any problems. Just my two cents.

Jooleyen,
6ft 6in MH is the best all worund multi purpose bass rod. I used a 6ft MH as my first bass rod wiht a Mitchell Avocet, and still have the rod, just upgraded the reel. Berkley Lightnin rods are great rods for the cost.

on the front drag the drag is on the front..not sure where the drag is on the rear drag..they hide it sometimes.

using a shimano sahara as i do i can't say enough good things about it....i am not a big fan of rear drag due to the fact that you have to change your focus when you huntin for the dial....i love a front drag then you can keep you eye on the fish while adjusting it....just my humble opinion though.....i also use a custom made rod for this so i can't really give you an opinion on those....other than medium action, 6
'6 is excellent....

The rear drag control is in a place where it can be adjusted while fighting the fish. If you try to adjust the front drag while fighting the fish, you fingers/hand will get in the way of the line.
