Alright, I was gonna wait till I'm done building it, but I can't.
![]() ![]() Finished gluing up the cork yesterday (Took a lot longer tha normal). So today, My dad and I took it to his shop and stuck it on the lathe. Here's some pics before the handle was sanded: As you can see it's a split grip, that's why it took longer to glue the handle, had to do everytihng separate. I know a split grip isn't need for sensitivity w/ a cranking stick, but it cuts the weight down. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And here's the finished product: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I was really happy with how it turned out. I haven't tried it with a reel yet, but w/o one, it's fairly well balanced. BB

they say you can fill those voids in your cork with glue and put the sand you have from sanding those pieces of cork in the glue and it will keep the water out ? Thats what I read anywho.. what brand is the blank ?

It's a lot of work, and wrapping the guides is the hard part. If you want to learn, you can get books from NetCraft, but getting all the right equipment can be expensive. BB

That's where I get all my supplies. For the money, I don't think you can beat the RainShadow brand of blanks. I'm going to use Fuji Alconite guides and a Fuji SiC tip. The reel seat is one made by rainshadow which has a unique texture to it that makes it seem soft. I really like it, but I still think Fuji seats are better quality. But to make the rod, you'll need cork (which has gotten very expensive) as well as the rest of the components of the rod. You'll need a wrapping station (you can use the individual things they have, but the wrapping station (however if is expensive) works the best. If you're seriously interested, I'd buy a good book on rod building from NetCraft and read a lot before you do anything else. BB

i think it would be cool to do one custom rod in my life at least. as much as i love to fish, it'd be pretty awesome to be on the lake and "hey kid what kind of rod is that?" " oh its a custom one i made" ![]()

Thanks guys, and bama, I mostly did the split grip cause I think it looks really cool. And to lighten the rod up a bit.

bubba, yes I did finish the rod, but like Isaid in another post, the yellow and black thread didn't come out good. The black bled onto the yellow turning it a nasty greyish yellow. I didn't bother with pics. And I don't have a camera right now, so I can't get any anyways.
keith, thanks, I liked the two tone to. I could have gotten yellow cork, but it wasn't really yellow. So I went with the dark color. I figure the dark color would to with any reel I stick on there too. Working with the cork composite or the burnt cork is difficult though since the regular cork is MUCH softer and it wears down a lot faster on the lathe. Had to be very careful. BB
