after an unsucessful morning of duck wacking-reason i aint at work-. i stopped by the local advance auto got some parts-switches, sodierless connections- i messed with the troller replaced the switch and bingo. i checked all settings it fully works.. which is amazing seeing it is a 71 omc troller..
i CAREFULLY removed all of the black eletrical tape -about 5 rolls of it- boy what a mess.. i removed 50 feet of dead end wiring.. got the front green/red light to work -switch again-the back light is being stubburn but i figure to tinker with it till about 2 pm then go see if i can't get a ducky.. zooker

Nice, I love tinkering with electrical stuff especially on boats! I had the chance to take electrical engineering at my school but instead choose aerospace engineering and we get build rockets

What is it with non-electricians and tape? It ain't friggin, you guys hear that? it AIN'T friggin necessary to put the whole friggin roll of that crap on the wires in your boat.
If you deem it necessary to add tape to your connections, do that, add it to your connections, don't spool the entire friggin roll of tape just cause, by god, you got it. sorry zooker, I'm done now. |

the liquid stuff is great but a truley a nightmare to remove.. the problem is back in the late 70's and thru the 80's solidering your connections was the way it was done. while a great connecter solider sucks if ya have to get up/under/thru/around tight spots. lets NOT get me started on wire nuts.. i took a razor knife and cut the tape off it was THAT thick. some of it put on at the factory in 71. the tape up mess hid all kinds of crap from splicing in on the main leads to an inline fuse-dam if i know what i goes to-that some time in the early 90's was put on. and oh yes a lovly mud dobber.. the crimp connecters are outstanding for 12 volt wiring systems.. on higher powered large draw systems-2 or 4 gauge- they even even use gold plated connecters. mind you in vessels the largest single wire will probly be either the starter hot line or the troller wires. both of which are 8 gauge in most cases.. as for shrink tubing i have used it but don't rely on it.. it gets brittle very fast -2 years or less- does not insulat the wires very well. it is not water tight in most cases.. when i do use it -which is rare- i seal both ends with silicone and eletrical tape it. sounds over kill but needed.. i completely hate having to rewire the same job a year or so later. because of crappy prdoucts such as shrink tubing... zooker

Zook these are specially made crimps with the shrink built in and they won't become brittle. EVERYONE uses them down here in the salt where corrosion gets ANYWHERE even if you think your console is sealed.
You can pick these up at boats world or west marine but I will say this they are super expensive. |

Duct tape is good for everything but wires. Too much width. Can be used, but you have to cut strips out.

I cant remember if its a Mopar of Motorcraft headlamp switch that comes with a pigtail and some shrink tubing that has a resin inside it that melts and flows out when you heat it, but it does make a weathertight seal. Wurth USA makes connector ends with the same material on the end instead of plastic. Check with a good dealership thats local to you.
