Default Poping The Question...

Hey guys, found a pond only 1/5 mile down the road. Neighbor has fished in it and said 6 lbers. have come out of it. I would love to fish it, but haven't asked if I can yet. How should I approach/ask the owner for fishing permission??

Is this your neighbor's pond, or does he have permission??

Be polite and honest, be sure he understands that you will leave the place clean, won't bring anyone with you, and are a catch and release fisherman. The worst he can say is no.... If you have a mutual friend or neighbor who could introduce you or vouch for you that could help..

Ask your neighbor if he/she would be "kind enough" or "so kind" as to allow you to fish in there pond. Then follow up with what brushhog had to say.

Oh boy...

"Hello ma'am, I was wondering, if you'd be so kind, if I could fish in your lovely pond that I've recently noticed. I'm strictly a catch and release fisherman, and I will not only leave the pond the way I found it, but pick up anything that I may find in the process of fishing it, if you should so allow."

Now theres only one thing to say for her following response, no matter what it is [unless its a question, duh]:

"Thank you, I very much appreciate it, good day ma'am."

Most property owners are worried about liability issues. I'd be sure to point out you won't invite anyone without her permission first. A small gift at the end of the season would help insure you are allowed back. I did this for all the farmers who let me hunt on their property. I would hand deliver a Christmas gift to all of them. Nothing big, but something nice to say thankyou.

Very imporant that you sound and look rather 'professional.' Speak fluently, use proper grammer, and be curteous and kind, dont walk up there second guessing, be completely sure about what you are going to say, and how you will say it. The gift idea sounds like a great idea. Dont sound arrogant or cocky, and dont say anything to her about any liability issues, such as "Also, I release you of all liability of any possible injury." First of all, the simple fact that you are 'telling' her what you will not do sounds bad, even if its for something good. People dont liek to be told what to do, especially if its from someone younger than them, no matter what. this also makes the owner think about that liability issue, because she may have not even considered the fact until you mentioned it, and even with you saying you release her of liability, it means nothing. Furthermore, dont as* kiss, be nice and polite, but dont over-do it. With all that being said, go for it.
