I know it's tough with countless choices out there. If you're just getting started, I'd buy a few that are appropriate for the depths you're fishing, selecting from well-known companies. Examples are Rapala, Bomber, Cordell, Norman, Bandit, Strike King and so many others. Original Shad Raps are my favorites. I'm not saying they're better than others, but for reasons I'm not sure I understand, I have the most confidence in those.

Like Marty says, there isn't a "best", but there are 3 that I think are "must haves":
A chrome/blue back Rat-L-Trap, a shallow running shad/pearl black back-these baits have a short, square bill that will deflect off cover, and a deeper running crawfish color that will run deep enough to dig into the bottom like a crawfish. I have several boxes of cranks and find myself using these more than anything else. I also like a chartreuse/black back in stained water and a citrus shad color in bright conditions. Stick with known brands like Marty suggests and you will be fine.

Reb and Marty nailed it. A glass rap is a good addition for cold fronts and clear water.

I use Strike King crankbaits and some Bandits. They're not the best out there, but they're good baits and at a good price.

here is my favorites though they are costly -at the tune of $30 each- ask il they slay but you have to use a decoder ring to figure them out and set them to the RIGHT fequency to catch bass...

Pick no more than a total of 5 or 6 , buying different depth rated cranks and learn to catch fish with them before buying any more. Then from there you will have a better idea on what works for you. There is no need to buy the high dollar cranks, the old basic brands will catch you alot of fish.

I always do well on the Rapala DT cranks in Shad and Bluegill patterns.
Depending on what type of water you are fishing, you might want to pick up a few that dive to different depths (the DT 4 will dive up to 4', the DT 6 will dive up to 6', and so on). |
