go a head run bear love a sporting food. bear will give chase kinda like a dog. keep in mind a bear only LOOKS slow. but can cover 300 yards faster than a horse..

backing away slowly is better..bear tend to be spooky at any loud noise.. the story of a hand full of gravel in a tin can is true.

as mack pointed out a female with cubs wont back down from NOTHING..

i have had more than a few run ins with bear while coon hunting.. i have had to shoot a couple of times in the air to scare the bear off. it don't help when ya got a half dozen hounds trying to crawl inside your helmet..

You actually did the wrong thing! read underneath. You could have made it attack you!

Survive A Bear Attack

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Lie still and be quiet.
Documented attacks show that an attack by a mother black bear often ends when the person stops fighting.

2. Stay where you are and do not climb a tree to escape a bear.
Black bears can climb trees quickly and easily and will come after you. The odds are that the bear will leave you alone if you stay put.

3. If you are lying still and the bear attacks, strike back with anything you can.
Go for the Bear's eyes or its snout.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A BEAR

Make your presence known by talking loudly, clapping, singing, or occasionally calling out. Whatever you do, be heard--it does not pay to surprise a bear. Remember bears can run much quicker than humans.
Keep children close at hand and within sight.
There is no guaranteed minimum safe distance from a bear: the farther, the better.
If you are in a car, remain in your vehicle. Do not get out, even for a quick photo. Keep your windows up. Don't impede the bear from crossing the road.

HOW TO AVOID AN ATTACK

Reduce or eliminate food odors from yourself, your camp, your clothes, and your vehicle.
Do not sleep in the same clothes you cook in.
Store food so that bears cannot smell or reach it.
Do not keep food in your tent--not even a chocolate bar.
Properly store and bring out all garbage.
Handle and store pet food with as much care as your own.
Three types of bears are considered most dangerous...
1. Females defending cubs

2. Bears habituated to human food

3. Bears defending a fresh kill

Just remember, you don't have to outrun the bear...................you just have to outrun your buddies!

In Ct it would habve been a black bear. Supposidly the least threatning of all the north American Bears. Having said that ,here in Tennessee there have been 2 people killed and several others attacked by black bears in the last 5 years. Fish2win

Thats what I said, In the last 5 years there have been 2 people killed by black bears here in Tennessee. One was a lady that was trout fishing inside the Great Smokeys Park the other a lady that was attacked with her children inside the Cherokee National Forrest. Last month a man was slapped by a bear on Ski Mountain near Gatlinburg. They are supposed to be non carnivorous but they do eat meat. I have seen that with my own eyes. They are not as unpredictable as a grizzly however.Fish2win

Bears ain't out to eat you, but you have to remember thatyou're on his turf. Back off slowly, then run. Or, if you're on a hill, run downhill.

Hey Flbassman, I have heard that theory also. It goes like this. The bear has longer rear legs than front. That make it hard for him to run down hill. Now I just need one more peice of information. Where in Florida are you going to find a hill to run down. HA HA Fish2win

Real Quick True Bear Story!
Last summer my wife and I were working at a boy scout summer camp. One night the cub scouts came into camp for a camp fire and dinner with the boy scouts.
My wife and I were coming out of our cabin to check on the camp. Two ladies ran up to us very upset because they saw 2 bears. They were at campsite 13 which was as far away and up hill a camper could get from the mail parking lot. Next stop after that site was my gun range about a mile further up hill. Ok the bear comes through the camp site and these two ladies get frightened and leave. The scouts stayed put. On the way to the parking lot to leave camp the ladies stop at campsite 7 which is down hill from 13. You guessed it. As they were sounding the alarm about the bear into the camp comes the bear. Scouts stayed ladies leave. They run into my wife and I. My wife goes to get the camp director, I go looking for the bear. Part of my job is to get the bear out of camp and back to his area. As I'm walking towards the parking lot I see the ladies using the payphone near the camp store. From my spot I can see the front of the store ( where the ladies are ) and the other side of the store where the (you guessed it ) bear is coming out of the woods heading to the trash can about 3 feet away from the ladies on the phone. Lady on phone sees bear, bear sees the lady on phone. Lady screams, heads for her car, bear heads for trash can.
What these ladies did not know was the bear walked through the campsites most nights. It was the same bear, each time.
I used my 4x4 to chase the bear from the camp. Until the next night, which is another story.

Today my sister, who lives on a secluded 7 acre piece of land on a mountain, put my little 8 month old niece in the carseat, and closes the door. She walks back to the house, to get her purse, and suddenly hears zeek(her usually calm boxer) growling viciously. She turns around to see a black bear, as tall as the Jeep, sniffing the car near my niece. After about 5 minutes of her clapping, and making noise, the bear walks away .
