I've always used a jig head for tubes, but could see where pegged or unpegged would work

I Peg Them All The Time. You Cant Skip A Lure With An Unpegged Weight.

I peg them-usually I'm fishing heavy cover and I don't want the tube to go down one side of the cover and the weight down the other side.

i always peg mine too. i like the weights that screw into the plastics. i think i feel a lot more stuff when it's pegged. that much may just be my imagination but i do know it helps a lot in cover and when skipping like bassthumb said.

Odd man out here, I very rarely peg my bullet weights. I probably get hung up more this way, but I have more confidence in this approach. My thinking is the bass may or may not pick up the weight, which may or may not mean, he may hold onto the bait longer. If he runs with it, I can feel and usually see the line moving and set the hook before he swallows it. Surprisingly, I have not foul hooked as many bass since I switched to NOT pegging my weights. The trick is to keep in constant contact with the bait, although, you must both watch your line and feel your bait at all times to get away with this practice.

I always peg my weight as well. But as bsb said, there are dissadvantages. Feel is one, but another is "popping" the fish's mouth open when using large diameter weights (like for punching through mats). That's where i recommend tungston.

Depends on the line and what you are pegging with. Braid-no problem. Mono or Fluoro-a toothpick could hurt it. I use the rubber Peg-Its, and using a rubber band will work, too. Tie an overhand knot in a rubber band around your line, pull it tight, slide it down flush with the weight and trim off the excess.

i don't see where toothpickin the weight really harms the line.. i do see if you use a big bullet weight 3/8 or bigger yeas it can pop there mouth open as i tend to use 1/16-1/8 oz it really don't have that effect..
i retie every so offend during the day depending on how much i use that bait.. zooker

If you really like to skip a Tube Bait you can go to www.honeycreektackle.com and purchase the "Stupid Tube Kit", this is the tube and the way to rig it that Terry McWilliams used to almost win the Bass Master Classic as an ameatur. Matter of fact that 4 1/2 pounder G-Man caught came off the same spot that Terry had been fishing all week. Terry left it for 2 hours that day and GMan came in stuck that fish. By the way that fish would have won him the Classic!! It's easy to rig and use, an make that bait completely weedless!!!

I dont really use alot of tubes, but when T-rigged I do like a glass bead between the weight and nose-but only on a lizard, just seems to work for me. If I need the weight to be stuck in place I use those bullet weights with the corkscrew (screw in bullet weights) but I like those with culprit or manns hardnoses because the 'ol monster and mag 11's are really soft, but heavy so I go weightless when I can.

I dont peg either too much, maybe with a paca craw...
the stupid kit is a nice way to get started, however each component in that kit can be easily found at tackle stores or walmart, and you can mix and match your very own! |
