I guess. I don't really follow, but it'd be good to see a young-gun come out and win in his first season.

It was a great game. Imagine the party that will be held at the Manning's home. I'd love to be there for that. I'm not a fan of either team, but I'm glad the Giants one. Next year, GO COLTS!!!

I really didn't care who won-pro football I can take or leave. College football is a different story.

I like college better, too. There's so much more meaning, more emotion. For some seniors they are playing their last game of their lives and they leave it all out on the field. I know That I'm not going to be good enough to go to the NFL, so when my senior year comes around, and we're playing for the state at UOP, it's going to be so emotional for me.

I really prefer college as well, although they are screwing the game up on both levels.
The college game has been hurt by the rule of 85 scholarships as well as the restrictions on the amount of practice time you get with the kids. The rule of 85 is the rule by which I believe you can only have 85 scholarship football players on a team. It used to be much higher. This has increased parity in college football, which is, contrary to what many think, a bad thing. College football used to be one of the few sports in which teams aimed for mythical perfection, IE the undefeated season, but as we saw this last year the National Champion had 2 losses. How unworthy. Next the idiots will push for a playoff, and we really will end up with basketball on grass. The restrictions on practice are just as bad though. They make it impossible to really teach the nuances of the game, instead coaches are forced to substitue good athletes and run offensive systems that get these althetes into space where they can use natural instincts rather than developed skill. It makes for a dumbing down of the game. There is now only 1 way to win in college football. Recruit natural, often thuggish athletes. Pay them if you have to. The dumb ones are just as good as the smart ones. Character doesn't matter. They will be gone to the league in a couple years anyway.

WTL - well said. Practice restrictions have really crimped the game and given rise to many of the spread type offenses where the best athletes just run for daylight. The lack of loyalty, to their school, among coaches and players makes it increasingly difficult to root for a team that players and coaches care less about than the fans...
I'm still, after many years, mulling over my feelings about a play-off... The rule of 85 lends itself to parity certainly, but if practice restrictions were lifted and the rule of 85 remained I feel that the proverbial coaching cream would rise to the top... Anyway, just a couple of copper coins....

The irony here is it is the NCAA creating this enviroment that is supposedly to promote the student athlete. The practice restrictions are supposed to give them more time for class.
Instead it means that the traditional ways to win football games: Preparation, practice, working out, and intricate, beautiful offenses like the triple option are all negated by speed. Its like basketball where year in year out the best teams are loaded with the best true freshmen in the land. Streetball is the game. So do whatever it takes to get those players. Replace working out naturally, since time is so limited, with juicing and working out. Lie and cheat on the recruiting trail, thats how you win football games. And it is the NCAA's policies which have made that so important. Meanwhile they punish the schools who cooperate in investigations with them (Alabama), while letting Ohio State, USC and Tennessee off the hook for much more eggregious and proven violations. Its like the NCAA wants you to do things the wrong way.

WTL - it is no accident that one of the only, successful, DI schools still running a true option was the Air Force Academy. With Coach Fisher DeBerry gone I wonder how long that will last.
Football players, by my estimation, probably miss a lot less class than basketball players, baseball players and others. Baseball and Basketball may play three or four times a week, sometimes stringing together some road games. Any arguement the NCAA makes about big time athletics and academics is as hollow as Mile Brands pointy head.

Brushog, you know your football. Watch and see what Paul Johnson runs at Georgia Tech. That is going to be my second favorite team next year, see how the flexbone does in the ACC. Georgia Tech can't recruit with the other teams the same way because of their academics.
PS, my team and Alma Mater, Alabama is currently #1 in the recruiting rankings and looking to finish that way.

Thanks, Coached at the high school level for the last 15 years - scouting and breaking down tape for varsity and running the Jr. high program. The flexbone takes great timing, but if you can pull it off it could negate the speed advantage most ACC defenses will have over Ga. Tech. If you can make speed LB's and Ends guess, instead of read, you can be successful. Part of the F-bone is to entice guessing on the part of those guys!
I don't now much about Johnson. The little I've read makes him seem dynamic and capable. Letter of intent day is just another example of the meat market of football, full coverage on ESPN, but God knows Coach Saban can recruit....

Coach Johnson won a few national championships at Georgia Southern. I remember watching them have 4 guys over 100 yards rushing in 1 game, they were a machine. I also liked their uniforms, they were exactly like Bama's but replace the Crimson with Blue...numbers on the helmets though, very old school.
![]() He then went to Navy and had a very impressive stint there. Everyone says he is top notch. We looked at him last year after thankfully Rich Rodriguez fell through. Eventually I think the defenses will start to catch up to the spread. Its a constant evolution, or de-evolution rather. Coach Kines had Urban Meyers number running a 3-3-5 D. I'm not sure I like coach Saban's style D against spreads, but he has to coach what he knows. He seems to be able to adapt some though.
