Hey,
What type of baits do you guys suggest for fishing in high wind. Also on Windy days do bass move to deeper water or do they move into dense cover or both. What type of cover is best in wind. Thanks. Carl |

in wind i like to throw spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and jerkbaits. the depth will depend on a lot more than just wind but since wind means less light penetrates the water most of the time fish will move more shallow and cruise around looking for food instead of getting deep in cover.

Generally speaking "the wind is my friend". Wind, so long as it's not toooo strong helps fishing. Again, generally speaking, the wind moves the fish shallower. I don't know why but according to the general wisdom, wind breaks up the surface and the fish are more inclined to move shallow and are less spooky. Also, a wind that has blown in one direction for awhile tends to concentrate the baitfish against the windy bank. Rip rap is a good area to look for fish when the wind has been blowing into it for a day or two. Wind = spinnerbaits. I rarely throw a spinnerbait when it's still. I haven't had much luck throwing subtle topwaters in a big wind. I don't think the fish can see or hear them too well unless you're throwing a big chugger or something like that. Also, when it's windy, use a heavier weight on your Texas rigged baits so you can maintain contact with the bait and know what it's doing. Crank baits are sometimes a booger to throw into the wind. If you're throwing a big wind resistent crankbait, crank your brake way down and loosen off it a little at a time until you match the brake to the conditions. Otherwise, you'll get a monster backlash. Always point the bow of the boat into the wind so you can control the speed at which you fish with the trolling motor. Just some random thoughts on fishing wind.

On windy days i prefer to throw a lipless crankbait or spinnerbait. If i am targeting some sort of cover (grass mats, reeds, stumps) I prefer the spinnerbait. Now if i'm fishing a barren bank adjacent to some cover, or in some cases open water, i prefer a 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lipless crankbait. For the spinnerbait i generally prefer white or chartreuse/white, and chrome black or chrome blue for the lipless crankbaits.

Lately I've been throwin' the Shakey Head around shallow cover. I.e. - Docks, outside weed edges, stumps/logs, boats, holes in weeds, etc. Draggin' it up ledges and through shallow pebbles has been the best.
Yep, it works... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -Buzz ![]() |

Fish the bank the wind is blowing into. Tough to beat a spinnerbait or lipless crankbait fished parallel to a wind blown bank.
