I have read several thanks for serving message in other threads over the past couple of months and wanted everyone to know that as one who served, I appreciate the comments. I know that in all other cases I did not post anything after the "thanks" and wanted to let you all know why.
I joined the Marine Corps in late 1991 after learning that Keg stands and failed attempts with women did not classify as a major at my college. (My blood-alcohol content was often higher than my GPA). I did not join out of a calling to serve but rather because I had no clue what to do with my life. On March 15th 1992, I recall the meanest looking man I had ever seen standing in the front of a bus and saying “I welcome you on behalf of the Commanding General of MCRD Parris Island…..Now get the F*(& off my bus……….” This was the first time I thought I might have made a mistake. In the 12 years that followed, there were times that I was sure I had made a mistake, but those times were few and far between. The Marine Corps gave me opportunities that I could have only dreamt of. I have stood on every continent on this earth. This farm boy from New Market Virginia has gotten the opportunity to sit in the throne of a dictator, climb the pyramid steps of a world leader’s tomb, and track a white rhino in the wild. I learned the difference between alive and simply living. I learned that the only color that mattered was not that of their skin, but rather the color of their uniform and flag they defended. I have established friendships with bonds so strong that not even death itself will break them. I was able to laugh with, curse with and even cry with those same friends. I have been a best man and pall bearer for some of them. I have been the God-Father to their children or the shoulder they leaned on when they got the dreaded “letter from home” (You know that it is a true friendship when you can stand toe-to-toe and throw punches at each other just because you both need to blow off steam, and then 10 minutes later buy each other a round.) I have been treated by some of the most skilled surgeons in the world and am blessed to be able to walk with only a slight limp and a bad *** titanium foot. When I ever I am told “Thank you for serving” I struggle with finding the appropriate thing to say. I guess the best thing I could say would be. The pleasure was all mine! While this is not from a Marine commercial, I still consider it one of the best military appreciation things I have ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUrf6Qg4T4E One other note. Yesterday was the Birthday of the Marine Corps. Here are some good Marine Corps quotes. Warning…some use explicit language. http://4mermarine.com/USMC/quotes.html
