What type of bait do you find works best for crappie? I’ve mainly used live nightcrawlers and corn but thought about trying something a little different. Does the roadrunners work well?

Troll several minnow tipped jigs anywhere from 3 to 8 feet deep. Which ever depth poll that gets hit, thats the depth you fish at. Set anchor and just use minnows from that point on.
As far as free casting goes. Small road runners work great.

I've caught a few on small crankbaits but I caught one over 16 inches on a one inch tube in watermelon red flake.

Minnows, tubes and small curly tails with the plastics I prefer a pink head and white body till I locate them then I start to break it down from there on there color or bait preference.

for live bait, can't beat minnows. You'll catch more bluegills w/ worms. we don't do much crappie fishing, so I can't suggest a good artificial. I have heard the roadrunners work great though.
