Default St.Croix 6'8" Med. power, extra fast tip.... recommended application?

I have an avid series St. Croix rod with the above mentioned specifics. I have had this rod for several years and have hardly used it. Most likely purchased it prior to giving much thought to rod actions and their applications. Was using it yesterday doing some cranking and every fish I caught was barely hooked and lost a couple very nice fish with it.

I would think the extra fast tip is probably a poor action to have in a crankbait rod...... what are your recommendations? Thinking of buying a St. Croix Premier Crankbait rod with mod. action in medium / heavy power in 7 ft. length.

Any thoughts or advise is greatly appreciated !

I would run a drop shot and shakey head with the rod.

Good rod for worming and other plastics.
Especially weightless plastics up to 1/4 oz. weighted.
Fast action works well to detect bites on weightless applications.

Any finesse techniques should also work with fast tip.

Any application other then 'cranking'.
The fast tip gives easy bite detection but to much give for cranking.
With that said, 'I' sometimes use a fast tip on square bills cause 'I' can feel if I'm hitting rock, stump or fish.

The fast tip also allows for longer casts on weightless applications.
Some say Croixs are stiffer than an 'average' rod so the power 'may' be closer to a mid-heavy than an average Med. power.

(I'm assuming this is a bait casting rod)...Spinner baits, lip-less cranks, larger hard jerkbaits, medium -- lighter skirted jigs, spooks...

If casting, it sounds like a great jerkbait and topwater rod. I would also use it for darter heads, split shot rigs, shaky heads and maybe some weightless plastics and light t-rigs.

St. Croix Premier Crankbait rod with mod. action in medium, I got 4 of these. They take alot of abuse too.

I also have 2 Avids that I use for plastics.

I would want to use that rod for soft plastics so I could easily detect bites. As for the St Croix Premier crank bait specific rods, I agree with tomegun. I have a few myself and they are great crank bait rods. I also use my 6'6" Premier rod for hard body jerk baits like Rattlin Rouges, LC Pointer 100's, and others.

Sorry,.... I should have mentioned that it is a baitcasting rod.

Does anyone think the Medium/Heavy power would be too stiff for the type of cranking I want to do.... ie. medium sized squarebill cranks mostly around the half once size (KVD 1.5, etc) ... rarely much larger or smaller. ????

Myself, I would much rather prefer a medium power/moderate action. I think you would find a medium power rod for that size crank baits will be much easier to cast that size crank, give you better distance, and fewer lost fish. Now if you were talking about casting the larger deep diving crank baits, I would choose a medium heavy/moderate rod.

Either will work fine, the Premier rods are rated so that a Med power rod is designed to work best with baits in the 1/4 to 5/8 oz range and the Med. Heavy is rated at 3/8 to 1 oz. Base your decision on the baits that you will use with this rod.
In either case with the action being moderate the backbone/power of the rod is going to allow almost 50% of the rod to flex, a moderate action rod of any power never feels stiff to me.

My preference for soft plastics is spinning gear. I like the balance provided with the reel hanging from the rod underside vs. sitting on the top of the rod. I also like being able to hold the line directly with my index finger.

If you look at the St. Croix site they don't tell you what techniques are specific for their Avids. But if you look at the Legends they do. I used the legend info to guide me in purchasing my Avids.

According to their list a medium extra fast tip bait caster is to be used for jerk baits. I use myine for that and it's great. I also have a spinning rod in the same action and it does well also.

I can use either rod for: texas rigged weightless worms, wacky worms, weighted wacky worms. Drop shotting can also be done, although St. Croix recommends their medium light for this technique.

The Avids are a great rod, and come with a great warranty. They are also built in the US.

Thinking of buying a St. Croix Premier Crankbait rod with mod. action in medium / heavy power in 7ft.

First rod I'd use with 1/8-3/8 oz T-rigged plastics or jigs of same size. Nice rod.

Second rod would be a little heavy for the RC 1.5. I'd go with the PC70MM. I throw mine on a older 6'6" Med/mod. glass rod. While you're looking check out the Shimano Compre TC4 blank glass/graphite combo rods. Similar price range rods. Excellent crankbait rod (hopefully I didn't open a can of worms by suggesting another brand).

I got the Avid 6'8 med too. I use it for everything. Small cranks, jerkbaits, 3/8 spinnerbaits, texas rigged worms, senkos, and drop shotting too.
