First, Howdy Boys! Ain't been here for a bit-things got REAL crazy around here.
OK, here is one for you: I go out to thhe garage to look at a rod/reel setup I was thinking about. I use thoose black BPS rod socks to protect my gear. Anyway,I pick it up and notice something real strange: The clear coat from just above the handle to the 3rd guide from the tip was all bubbled up and peeling off. Brand new rod, too. Near as I can figure is it was leaning up against a shelf with some chemicals below it and fumes or something caused it to react and peel off. Rod is fine, just scraped/rubbed off all the peeling stuff off, cleaned it up and will clear coat it later. Still, strange thing to find.

Rod sock caught the fumes acted like a funnel.Since no visable damage geiger counter nearby?
It aint the first time a sock got someone in trouble, left one behind once when leaping out a second story window, long ago.Cure was to lose the other sock as wore penny loafers was common back then to go sockless. |

Thanks for posting your experience. Hopefully, it will help prevent someone else from making the same mistake of storing their rods in a possibly hazardous area.

Thanks for the share Reb.
Question, I have Rod Socks (maybe different brand?) and mine are pourous..I think... so wouldn't that prevent the sock from trapping fumes? Do you think the rod would have peeled stored open over the same chemicals? I'm curious if maybe it was just one of those rare 'badly produced' rods. I may send it back for replacement through the manufacturer. Even good companies are run by people who can make or mix something wrong. You said it was new ....so just maybe it was the rod and not the sock. Thanks again for the share.

Joe, I don't know. I really wouldn't worry about it unless you do what turned out to be a dumb thing like me

Sounds more like a factory defect than a reaction. Unless of course you keep all your paint cans and chemicals open. But if they are sealed, I doubt the very little that escaped would cause something like that. And at that point, even if it did escape, it would be a gas and slip right on through the rod sock (just like it slipped... Well diffused, past the closed container).

In defense of rod socks, which I generally don't use, that has to be a 1 in 5,000 event if the sock funneled fumes into a concentrated concoction that took off the clear coat.

I'd say longer odds than that, Billy. Rod is fine, just messed up clearcoat. Simple job to remove bubbled up clearcoat and then recoat it.
