Graphite line guides
I've been reading about Diawa's new ($500) rod series using graphite framed line guides... intriguing idea. Of course Diawa says the manufacturing process is too involved to offer the guides for sale separate of the rods, but there's little doubt in my mind that if these guides perform as advertised they will be available outside of the Diawa household. Any opinions about whether graphite might become the guide frame of choice in the next year or two...?

It's not like graphite is new or anything. Maybe for this application.
I always thought the benefits of graphite were either lubricant powder applications, or weight reducing structure. I don't think the weight of the guides has ever been a selling point for rods, so I don't see these being a big benefit. Nor do I see me paying $500 for a rod just because of the guides. |

No I think the Doug Hannon guide sets will be all the rage on spinning rods.. I had a chance to play with a ST Croix that had the set replaced and WOW what a difference. But it is a spinning rod and not a baitcaster.

guide weight is critical not for weight in hand, rather for blank performance. 4 grams doesn't sound like much but 50% does. The smallest, lightest guides that will do the job will maximize the overall build's performance. I agree that I don't see $500+ there.

Hypothetical... your favorite rod is available both as is AND with these new graphite guides with a $75 up-charge. Do you you go for the new guides?
I'd be thinking about it! oe |

My favorite rod ... then nothing needs to be changed, I'll stick with what is. I'd HATE to pay an extra 75, only to realize I don't like it as much as the original.

Is a bass more likely to bite the lure if the rod has graphite guides

Nope, you might be more likely to get that bass in the boat though.
