Default Gun Shy Dog

Up until last year, I had the perfect hunting dog. Literally, lived to retrieve birds. Dakota was the ultimate yellow lab, and nothing could stop him. But, one day when my parents got home from work, (after picking myself up from lacrosse, and my sisters from soccer), we found at that poor Dakota (3 years old) had found his way into the garbage. He got a bag of chopped meat, and started eating out of the bag,a nd unfortunatly, suffocated on the zip loc bag. So two weeks later we had Jersey Girl.

Jersey Girl is a GREAT dog. She doesnt have one mean bone in her body and she is just under 60 lbs. She LOVES fetching, but sadly, is gun shy as hell. I swear on this forum, she runs under my parents bed, when my mom pops her bubble gum bubbles near her. Does anyone know if it is possible to train a dog to not be gunshy? thanks guys

Take a look here. I have found this to be a pretty good website. If you don't find what you are looking for here, you might try a local club.

gunshy dogs are very tough to imposable to break.it takes a long time for them to get it back togather . i have delt with a gunshy dog only once. he was not as skittish as you described yours is. i used a bb gun-red ryder- i would play with the dog and my bro would shoot the bb gun off -do not aim at nothing just the noise of it going off. watch the dog the whole time if she cowers at any point. do not repeat this bb gun again for the day the next day same thing play with the dog and let a friend/brother use a bb gun at a distance even if the noise comes from 60 yards away watch the dog if you can keep her from cowering at say 60 yards move up to 50 yards and so on but only one shot per day, long tiring but worth the effort..

i own several labs in no way shape or form are they gun shy. my english pointers on the other hand are a differant story..

my dogs all have been around gun fire since they were puppies and my lab gets very excited when he hears gun shots...basicly cause he likes to go swimming..

you can take a lab to water just can't keep him out of it..

lol i have mine trained to "whoa" i stop him as soon as he hits land or climbs in the boat that 30seconds of time it buys me. lets him shake there not under my feet. when duck hunting in late winter this keeps ya from being wet and ice covered.

my older female lab -nitro- hates hunting in cold weather but dove retriving and using her nose in warm temps she is very good at. she is 9 years old plus my other lab is only 3 years old so i might as well hunt him in the cold temps -he seems to like it-
