In the past I haven't had a chance to fish late winter and pre spawn bass since I've been turkey hunting the past 5 springs. So before the bass go on the beds what patters can I expect for here in Iowa? Thanks

Dont know Iowa waters but a bass is a bass. Look for them on the areas ajacent to spawning grounds which normally will be on the north shores of the lake. Not always but usually. They will be holding on the outer structures waiting to move up onto the beds when the temps get right.

what do you mean by north shores, do you mean the side of the lake that is to the north? I didnt think bass could tell north from south.

has to do with sunlight warming the water..thats how they can tell. Well, they can't say "oh, this is the north shore!" but with the way the sun heats the water, they will migrate to the warmest part of it in winter, and especially during pre-spawn.

LMAO@ lovinfishin
Yea buddy didnt you know they carry around little compasses on there backs so they can be right on track. Sorry couldnt pass that one up. The north shores and coves in particular are protected from the coldest winds which are normally north winds therefore they get the least exposure from the winds therefore warming up abit faster than the others. Also if you take note the BEST spawning areas are usually NOT always on the northern side as well IF the structure permits it. Proved it AGAIN yesterday to a NON beleiver as far as the temp goes. Fished a lake with a guy that said it dont matter. Laugheed at him and proved to him that the 3 degree temp difference put 2 fish in the boat while fishing the cooler water gave up ZIP.

PreSpawn to me means one lure, the jerkbait. Along drops going to the shallows and all the ways in between!

anything that resembles shad is a good pre-spawn bait. Fish it wherever you can find deep water near a bedding area (shallow flats).
