Beginner needs a few pointers on bass fishing. . .

I residing for college in Southern Illinois, and recently got into fishing a lot with some friends, doing a lot of hook and bobber and fishing the bottom, and I havent the slightest idea on how to try and catch some decent bass. If anyone can tell me some easy gear to use and how to use it that'd be appreciated.
