Default CT River Bass fishing

I need some advise for fishing on the banks of the CT River. I'm using a TX weedless rig and sometimes a whacky rig. I usually go out in my Kayak in the early evening and drift down river. Is this not a good time to fish for bass or is there a better bait to use?
