How important is it that the trim works on a boat? I found a boat that is pretty nice and at a good price but the trim gauge isn't working...
Everything else works fine on the boat..... anyone know what it costs to get this fixed? |

Alot of guys say that they never look at their gauge after getting to know their boat. I do I look at it for the perfect trim to get a hole shot I want and for top end ,ever for cruiseing fuel efficiency I would not go with out one on my little putter but like I said alot of guy never look at them

Getting the gauge back to working is a matter of determining whether or not its the gauge or the sending unit. No you dont have to have it working to run and enjoy your rig but as boater stated its a good idea to have it working for the reasons he stated. In my mind it also is a saftey issue thing. Alot of folks can trim out a boat strictly by feel but it still boggles my mind when I see someone hauling azz across the water and they keep turning around to see ifn there water pump is woring or ifn they have the trim somewhere close to where they wanna be. To put it bluntly IT'S TO DAMN DANGEROUS TO DO THAT That few seconds that you are turned around can spell trouble up to and possibly death on the water. So what I say is ANY boat that has the capability of full instrumentation needs to have it working propewrly. Not only keeps your motor running correctly, saves fuel, but also can save your life.

More than likely a minor item. Worst case scenario would be a bad sending unit. You may be able buy and replace yourself depending on how many thumbs you have.

To test it, it is simple. Remove single wire from trim sensor located under pivot pinion of motor. Turn key on to run. Ground wire and watch gauge jump. If gauge not moving check ground is good and clean repeat. If still not moving Place OHM meter on ground and single wire of sensor. Tilt up and see if resistance changes.
I have replaced about four in my life and everyone was corroded internally. Never the gauge yet. Capt Mike
