I've never used this exact reel merlyn, however I have owned and used Garcia ABU's for 25 years now and I can tell you they are excellent. I would never doubt the quality of build when it comes to the Garcia ABU reels.

I haven't used the C5 either, but I recently bought a 5601 C4 for Musky fishing on the recomendation of the Guy at Cabela's. I have used other Abu's including lower end ones and they are great. My Abu Cardinal 100 is two years old and still very very smooth. IMO Abu's are good reel and you can't go wrong.

Well I pesonally didn't like the position of the Magnetic adjusting switch.I kept moving the settings as I fished.Other than that the reel is good.I don't think the magnetic system worked very well, but I got spoiled from using Daiwa's.

As for brakes, the newer reels like the C4's have Centrifugal brakes. I thought It'd be a pain to open and change when I needed to, but it's actually very easy. I still like Magnetic Brakes better: you can change with the simple turn of a dial.
PNJ, I agree about the Daiwa reels. I am a big fan of Daiwa. BB
