Banzai! Tora, Tora, Tora! Huckerberry Hashimoto Kamikaze Korrege, Cr*** of '45 Imperial Japanese Navy, very Retired Gladuation Day! Papa-san sooooo ploud he give big "Banzai" when we march past. (At 2:37 in vid.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hP8zQaHwWrA As if THAT wasn't sufficient...The IJN band in the video is playing "Gunkan" (Goon-kahn), the Official IJN March (="Anchors Aweigh" to them.) This ditty was NOT heard for years after WW2... banned, in fact, being considered representative of the "bad old days"...UNTIL...sometime during the '60s a US ARMY(!) band under the direction of a friend of mine (RIP, CWO Dave Mathis) performed it at an open-air concert in Japan. According to witnesses the Japanese crowd was at first stunned. Then they lit up. After it was over, Dave and the band were mobbed...hugged, kissed, and some IJN veterans and widows openly wept. Good stuff, that. L6 Last edited by Lancer6; 08-04-08 at 11:17 AM. |

That is old Japanese symbols there.. only about 17% of Japanese citzens can read that.
Kanji is the standard but this Katakana is only readable by those of wealth and power. You go from 17,000 symbols in Katakana to 45 in Kanji. So based on the web page I would guess that only well to do could possibly go bass fishing. Capt Mike
