I've never been too much of a buzzbait fan, using instead a Pop R or Spook when I think the bass are looking up but buzzbaits took a lot of the checks home in the tourneys I fished this year. I carry a bag of buzzbaits that I'll reach in and randomly select one from time to time but I've always pretty much considered them to be pretty much the same in that a bass will either hit one or they won't and the size shape and color doesn't make much difference which I'm probably wrong about. Like I said, I'm not much of a buzzbait devotee. However, after seeing the tournament results this year, I've made my mind up to fish a buzzbait more next year along with my go to bait, the jig and pig.
So, my questions to all you buzzbait guys are these: 1.Do sizes and colors really make a difference? If yes, what colors and sizes do you carry and when do you use them? 2.What brands do you recommend and why. 3.Any tips, tricks or advice you can give me on fishing a buzzbait?? Such as, trailer hooks----or, not, multiple blades, line size and type, retrieves etc. |

I like the standard 2 bladed in 3/8 in white, white n chartruse, or black.
Almost always thrown in 1-5 ft of water, try to bump into objects like wood, also you can rip it during the retrieve to get extra bubbles and noise. Hart makes a good buzzbait, some have holes in the blades to leave a bubble trail. |

1. Yes size and color make a difference. Use darker buzzbaits on cloudy or darker days. Use lighter baites after the sun gets up good, or not much cloud cove. Size is dependent on what size baitfish the bass are eating (IMO)
2. I like War-Eagle, or Booyah 3. Use a trailer if your gettng short strikes, multiple blades goes with the size thing in my opinion. Vary your retrieves till you find what is working that particular day. One of my favorite things to do is imagine a bass is following your bait, and make a sudden speed change like a baitfish darting to get away then slow back down. Also dont be afraid to bounce that sucker off everything you can, run it as close to trees and laydowns as possible, they are suprisingly weedless. |

1. i have 2 basic colors that i use, white or black. every buzzbait i use is a variation of one of these colors.
2. booyah and hart are my favorites 3. usually the slower you can reel a buzzbait the better, keeping your rod tip up will help. also don't be afraid to run it into things like trees, brushpiles, docks, ect. a lot of bites will come as he bait hits something and they are more weedless than you would think.

Could someone provide a link to show exactly what we are talking about there. I'm new to the term 'buzz-baits'. I use a lot of top water spinners with flat blades and skirts. Is that the same thing?

I have had a lot of luck with buzz baits on the river. I use White most of the time but on cloudy days and sometimes late afternoons I will go with a Black one. I'm not too picky about brands. I've caught as many on the cheapos from Wally World as I have some of the more expensive ones.... the bass don't seem to care what brand it is. I use a fast retrieve and begin it as soon as the bait hits the water. This works well in moving current. I will also add a trailer hook if I'm not around a lot of wood.

I like a 1/4 oz. black buzzbait when fishing rivers. I use a 1/2 oz. in most lakes or ponds. I mainly fish black and sometimes white/chartruse. Lunker Lure is my favorite brand.

My best luck with buzzers are 1/2 ounce black with gold blade thrown in the chop.

Sorry about the late response Bama to answer your ? most waters that I fish have a good clarity but a few lakes have less than 2ft and I always still throw black and (gold).I have thrown the rainbow at them but always come back to black.

lol, well while it may not be 12 degrees here, the wind is blowing around 50 mph. white caps on the river as i type. cloudy, rain coming, freezing temps coming too. it would be alright if the wind would die down.
