Default One cast, One Bass.....

Thats the way my day started.....Caught a nice chunky bass on the first cast of the morning. Right then I thought "Either its gonna be a great day or thats the only bass i'm gonna catch today...lol". By the time we left, that statement proved to be almost true on both counts.....I did catch a second bass, but it still turned out to be a great day thanks to Mother Nature.

While trolling down an extremely steep shoreline, we begin to hear the sounds of a critter crying out....either its hurt,or in trouble, or fighting or something of the sort....I thought it might be a squirrel at first, but as we cleared a large section of overhanging trees, I could see some sort of critter running frantically up and down the bank and it was larger then a squirrel. As we got closer I realized it was a Long tailed Weasel, and the cries are coming from babies. At this point I try to multitask and grab my camera, while trying to maneuver the boat closer with the trolling motor while fighting a mild (yet frustrating) wind....."remember i'm new at the foot control thingy".....At the same time i'm doing this, I can feel myself stepping on one of my rods on the floor, and i'm trying not to break it....All while trying to capture this unique moment of nature on my digital point and shoot camera.....The one time I wished I had taken the daughters high def video camera and not mine.

As probably most of you are, I'm a big nature lover, so its pretty cool when you catch an interesting moment in the wild, much less a moment between a wild animal parent and child....definitely something you don't see very often. I've been stompin thru the woods and fishin most of my life and at almost 53yrs old, this was the first Weasel i've ever run across. That means this moment ranks right up there at the top with the time I saw a bald eagle snatch a fish from the lake while Ron and I sat on the boat and watched. Nature channel LIVE....hahaha.

Anyway, I thought you guys might find it as cool as I did.....sure made up for a sloooow fishin day. I hope the following video link works.

66,

Thank you for that awesome video. Yeah, it's probably not going to make it into the next National Geographic special, but I liked it anyway.

I totally understand about dropping everything to capture something cool with my camera. I love fishing, but when something interesting happens on the bank, I drop my fishing rods and start clicking.

Wow, that's really neat. It must have been a day for seeing new things because as I beached the boat at the ramp this evening I saw a box turtle filling in a hole. I looked in the hole and it had just laid an egg, never seen that before.

Awesome 66. I love seeing cool stuff like that in nature.
Coolest thing I've ever seen while fishing has to be when I saw a 6 point buck swimming across the main channel which had to be 300 yards and 60 feet deep.

John, I just realized you had to be a member of Facebook to view the video, so I posted it on Youtube, and you should be able to see it at the link below.....hopefully....lol

Oh, by the way.....I forgot to mention that my bream fishin buddy Ron, got to the water this morning only to realize he didn't have his tin of earthworms so he was resorting to an old bottle of Gulp red crawlers or something like that, when I caught my second bass of the day on a grape colored Culprit worm, and ribbed him about needing to switch to plastics....lol. Well, He thought a minute and said "Ok....Show me how to rig up one". So I did, and about an hour later he caught his first ever bass on a plastic worm......Nice 2.5#.....I think he'll be tryin that again....lol

Cool video! That's the best part of fishing - watching nature around you.

Honestly, that looks more like a Mink to me than a long tail weasel, or at least the weasels I've seen here before. Mink are typically much darker like that pretty girl on the video - and they love the water.

Did she have tan underbelly? That's usually the easiest way to tell the difference.

I was pretty sure it was a Weasel when I first saw it, but after I got home that day I did a little research online to see what I could find, and I that's when I found pictures of what we saw and it was called a "Long tailed Weasel". She had a light colored underbelly, not white, but more yellowish really, and the tip of her tail was black.

That's cool...I really couldn't tell from the video as I couldn't see the underbelly. Our Long Tailed Weasels around here are much lighter than that gal is.

Either way, sweet video!
