Using braid on my 19.99 Daiwi Samurai combo the past year killed it finally and so I set out on a mission to Dicks Sporting Goods to get a new spinning reel and look for a decent rod. I looked around the counter and was down to choosing an Abu Garcia Cardinal, or the new Daiwa Takara 2500. I have had a good experience with an Abu Garcia ultra-light reel but something about the Daiwa just got me so I got it on sale for 49.99 and used my Rewards coupon for another $10 off and also used my coupon for an extra 200 points so I made out like a bandit on it. I was going to get a new rod as well, but I figured that the 1 piece 7 foot MH rod that came with my POS Shimano reel that also crapped out would do the trick so I saved even more money by not having to buy a new rod. Put half a spool of 8lb BPS mono on for backing and filled it up with Power Pro 20lb Green braid matched with a 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook and Zoom Finesse worm in Watermelon Green and headed to the pond. On the water the reel and rod handled perfectly, the reel is a bit heavier than my less expensive combo reels but thats because it has 9 bearings and is SUPER smooth. 4 casts into the day and I get a nice 16 inch 3lb bass so needless to say I am stoked about my purchase and am glad the Monkey rewarded me so well for feeding it.
