OK, so Skeet Reese's 7.0:1 gear ratio baitcasting reel brings in 27.5 inches of line per turn of the handle, now the 6.2:1 gear ratio reel brings in 23.5 inches of line so what I am wondering is this reel is on the "slower" side so I should get the 7.0:1 gear ratio for the more speed, which is actually 6.4:1 gear ratio's inches per turn. It is slower than most 7.0:1 gear raito reels, but does it have any more tourk? the 6.2:1 is really slow, it has the speed of a 5.3:1 gear ratio speed. so should I go with more speed or tourk on this one?
Thanks. |

This must be a preference of Skeets because his signature Revo with 6.4:1 reels in 24 IPT.
The long handles will give you more torque, as will a lower gear. It depends on what you're doing with the reel. If you're fishing cranks, I'd go with the lower IPTs. Anything else, I'd go with the higher IPT. I actually like something around 32" for jigs, worms, etc. and around 28" for things like spinnerbaits. BB

Where are you getting these #'s?
A 7.0 means the spool turns 7x's per revolution of the handle. Is the circumference of the spool REALLY 4"? I haven't seen the thing, but that seems way too big. |

Then I'd go with the higher IPT. BB

ah, ok. I guess I didn't think of that. DOH! lol. Anyways, that seems feasible, since the diameter would be approximately 1-1/4" if the circumference in 4".
To answer your original question, the retrieve rates are provided by the manufacturer and can be found on some retail sites like BPS. BB

Yeah the higer inches per turn still should have a good amount of tourk because of the longer handle right? why, because I have a citica in a 6.4:1 ratio, and throwing a spinner bait on that the handle is pretty hard to turn, and so since the 7.0:1 has less tourk I don't want the handle to be really hard to turn but the longer handle should make up for the gear ratio right?

You've got a good grasp on it, I think. Longer handle, less inches per turn retrieval speed, and a lower gear ratio will all gain you more torque, with less speed. Whether or not an X.X:1 ratio reel with Y amount of IPT with a Z length handle will give you less/more torque/speed than a A.A:1 ratio reel with B amount of IPT with a C length handle is hard to judge.
All three measurements change the amount of effort needed to turn the handle. Whether a 7.0:1 ratio reel with a longer handle will be the same as a 6.4:1 with a shorter handle is anybody's guess, but the longer handle will help.

Yeah, MB's right. It'd be hard to tell you how the torque of THAT 7:1 reel with the long handle would compare to say the Citica. You'd have to run the numbers through some fancy math formula that maybe NFE can tell us.
I can tell you the 6.4:1 Skeet Reese Revo with the long handle cranks very easy. I don't know how much is due to the long handle though. BB

OK, It is looking like I am going to be getting the 7.0:1 because most topwaters you use the rod tip same with jerbaits and jigs and worms it is just the spinner bait that I am concerned about but... o well, haha. Welp, then I am hoping the longer handle will make up for the loss of tourk, It should,

Realistically, unless you're throwing something with a lot of drag, like a big deep-diving crankbait or a spinnerbait with a huge Colorado-style blade, the 7.0:1 will work just fine. 6.x:1 ratio reels are considered pretty much the "all-purpose" reels, with the slower 5.3:1 or so reels used for the high-drag lures, and the 7.0:1 "burners" used for something you really want to reel fast, such as waking spinnerbaits just below the surface.

23.5 inches per turn would make it harder to do certain techniques like jerkbaits and topwaters and worms cause you use the rod tip so a faster gear ratio would be better, but, I should be able to get away with the 7.0:1 because most of the time I will be reeling in just to pick up the slack line. I am not concerned about fighting the fish either.

OK. Thanks for your guys help i am gonna get the 7.0:1 gear ratio. I am glad that when I wen't to gander mountain they only had the 7.0:1 ratio cause I would have already had the 6.2:1 if they had them, but now I will go back to get the 7.0:1. haha
