Weathers looking nice for the next 10 days, that rain's hopefully gonna help melt the snow and ice. Even though bass season's not till may, trout, crappie and northers are in the same lakes as bass with open seasons.

I know it's none of my business what you do, but come on. Do you think that CO's are really that stupid? I know people tried that in MI and they were given tickets. I've also heard that they are going to be enforcing it more this year. If WI is anything like MI, then I do hope you get a ticket. It would really suck to hear you lost your right to fish because you thought it would be "cool" to get out early.
If you do go, don't post about it. I'm not a fan, and I hope that Kevin isn't a fan of people bragging about breaking the law, because that is what you will be doing. |

Thanks guys, you're right, I saw that about the pike a while ago I won't be fishing for them, that's for sure. I'll definitely be only fishing for trout for trout, though once I get tags and all the stuff.

Hmm... Biggins brought this photo to my attention.
http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/images/basszonedef.gif (thanks biggins) According to this, http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/seasons/bass.htm The southern zone has only a season for harvest. Or at least it does not mention a C&R season.

I certainly don't recommend that Sammy break the law, but again I'll chime in on how stupid the laws are in Wisconsin. Just more government control by a few leftist, elitist wackos. Just like "fly only" streams and rivers.
You can't fish 6 months a year...sounds like paradise. ![]() As is often the case, the hypocrisy is staggering. Those who swear by C & R in other places, for some reason think it would kill all of the fish in Wisconsin during the cold months. The policy is clear...require C & R in places they figure the population will refuse not to fish, and outlaw fishing altogether where they think (and obviously rightly so) they can get away with it. The reason they get away with it in Wisconsin is because everybody wants walleye up there. If they tried this crap with walleye, they'd get booted out. I think most fishing regulations represent the angling population's willingness to wear a collar, not the fish stocks' need to be regulated. I would love to see some evidence of how the bass population was on the verge of extinction before these ridiculous seasons were put into effect.

Bryce,
The only thing I can think of is the concern with cold water fish being caught so deep. Here is an article that speaks about bass mortality rate in deep waters. I do not say that this is scientific fact, but it is a theory on why the law "might: exist. http://kramergonefishing.com/2011/02...ats-the-scoop/

You are right about deep water winter mortality. I know even here in Indiana, people will ask you to be smart and keep any crappie you catch, as they are usually caught in 40 feet of water, and they will not survive the pressure change at their metabolism level. I bring crappie up because that is what we southern Hoosiers fish for in Winter, not having a lot of walleye.
I do have a question though....in a state like that where so many people ice fish, what happens to the bass caught through the hole? Obviously, you can not pick and choose what bites your lure. Do all of those fish get a death sentence? I'm surprised they don't ban ice fishing too.

Good question that I have no real answer for.
Only guessing here, but perhaps they figure that there are few enough bass being targeted with ice fishing to allow it. I am by no means saying that it is right or wrong, just a guess.

I have caught bass through the ice, every year I go out actually. However I never target them, it just happens. Also the lakes I fish are usually less than 20 feet so they go back just fine. When they are hungry, they will bite I guess. Hopefully everyone else releases them also. Last edited by Jrok; 03-15-11 at 11:14 AM. Reason: putting what I quoted in italics |
