Spinnerbait Knots

I've been told that the Palomar knot is the best to use for spinnerbaits but I can never seem to get the knot to laydown properly as with standard hooks. Do you put the loop over just the hook part of the bait or both the hook and the blades? Any other suggestions on different knots would be helpful.

Take the loop around the whole bait... hook and blades... The palomar knot is about the only knot I ever use, it's strong, very fast to tie, and simple.

Thanks for the info. I was only running the loop around the hook part and it was failing. Its going to be in the 50's today so maybe I'll go out and try it down by the riverside.

The palomar is a great knot. But my personal preference, probably because it was the first knot my dad taught me, is the improved clinch knot. I use it for most of my fishing, except for braided lines. For that, I tie the palomar.

Not to hi jack this thread, but what knot do you guys use on crankbaits and topwater lures?

I was just practicing the rapala knot with paracord and seems like itll be a tricky knot tying out on the water.

Not that its a super hard knot, i was just wondering if theirs a easier one?

Crankbaits and topwaters I use a palomar knot on also... I tie a palomar on everything... although for flipping I've been toying with the snell knot.

Cranks, topwater, lipless, just about any hard bait I remove the split ring and use a Norman speed clip. I change baits often, and tieing knots becomes tiresome. I use a palomar for the speed clip, and only retie when the line frays.

I too am a speed clip believer especially shorebusting. On boat I have the ability to carry more poles, hence less lure switching but shore fishing with only two or three poles I trade off lures alot.
Be aware though that there are different sizes of clips. The smaller clip limits jig hook attaching due to bigger fatter hooks and hook eyes. I too gravitate toward the Palomar on clip...although I usually wait till the wear on line causes a snap off, then I change.

Take about eight inches of line and double it over itself. Tie an overhand knot but, only start to pull it tight. Reach through the SINGLE loop with your thumb and forefinger and grab the DOUBLE loop. Pull the double loop through the single loop. Pull it down a bit until the knot that is starting to form is about 1/8" in diameter. Put your thumb and forefinger INSIDE of the double loop and open your fingers. If you watch the knot itself, it will "flip" over. You can now just lower your blades through the double knot, moisten and pull tight. it works with buzzbaits as well. Experiment with how much loop you need to effectively tie it. You will always need big enough loop to slip the blades through.

One small tip, just because it allways bugs me when the line twists and the loop doesn't lay down on the knot properly when cinched; after putting the bait through the loop, raise the loop as high as it will go on your main line. This really helps bring the loop down on the knot properly when cinching.

Just Learn to tie the Fish-N-Fool Knot and you will never have to worry about it again. It is just about as fast to tie as a Palomar and much stronger. It beat the Palomar in a head to head showdown on Knot Wars and beat it by an average of over 2 pounds in knot strength using the same lines. Plus it works great for all line types.

Although this is the basic knot if you are right handed it is easier to tie holding the hook in the other hand and reversing the whole diagram. Check out how I tie it on you tube here.

I recently started using the Eugene knot. Very simple, easy to tie, and it has worked very well for me:


I also use a Palomar knot. Both are good knots.

I started using this knot probably 3 or 4 years ago and I really like it. I did start having some issues with the knot breaking with really hard hooksets. I am not sure that the knot was the problem, it could have been a burr in the eye of the hooks I was using. Either way I started using the San Diego Jam knot for applications where I use a hard hookset, and use the Eugene Bend Knot and Palomar knot for everything else. What I like about the Eugene Bend Knot is when you tie it correctly you will hear and feel a "click" which guarantees that it was tied right.

If you have an iPad the "Knot Wars" app is excellent. Gives strength info using mono flour and braid.
