Pickwick or Dale Hollow?
Well my family decided that we were going on vacation to kentucky/ tennessee area and i maybe thought hopefully that i might be able to get away for a day with my dad and hit one of these lakes. But a few problems occured to me...
1. we would be flying 2. im from the west and would love to find a good guide to teach me how to fish differently. I leave on saturday ( kind of quick i know) and should be around for the following week my question is witch lake is better? (Id really like to catch a 5lb smallie even know i know ittle be hard in the summer) and what guides would you guys reccomend? Im sooo excited and really hope this works out. |

You can't go wrong with Dave Clark... www.trolldhl.com
I promise...he'll teach you to fish "differently". Honestly, in the middle of Summer I would think he would be your BEST chance at a 5+ lb smallie. You may also slay some trout or walleye. Just tell him Bryce sent you.

Never been to Pickwick, but I love Dale Hollow.

I planned on going to Pickwick for the first time last year, but it didn't work out. I have to admit that to be fair.
On the other hand, I dream of finding a different job in Nashville just to be close to Dale Hollow, and I have every intention of having my ashes scattered there when I go fishing for the last time, if that tells you anything.

This time of year, pickwick is probaby a nightfishing type pattern. Also, its not as accessible I think as Dale. Which lake is better for getting a 5 lb smallie with a guide? Its close, from everything I've seen. Pickwick might be more different than the lakes you see out west, its really a river with lake characteristics. Dale is sure enough deep clear mountain lake.

OK, seriously - you are doing the intelligent thing in hiring a guide for unfamiliar water, even if you had a boat a guide for a day at the beginning of a trip is a smart idea. I haven't been on Pickwick (wanted to last year while I was at Wheeler, but it didn't happen) but I have been on Dale Hollow. I'm not a night fisherman, but that is the big thing at Dale this time of year along with trolling. If you don't mind fishing at night or trolling you should catch a couple smallmouth, along with (as NFE mentioned) trout and walleye. |

Definitely go to Dale Hollow if you want a SM or if that does not work out come to Norris Lake in East TN. My 7 y/o grandson caught a 6.5 SM 1 week ago

Just got back from Lake Champlain on the Vt side, wife and I put 49 lbs for 10 bass in my livewell to show people at the camp, all were smallies and caught between 7 and 11 at night, mine were on a sammy and wife thru a senko, now that place has plenty of great smallie action IMO.
