Still pretty new to this and for that I apologize. Is there a special kind of trailer hook that you use on spinnerbaits or buzzbaits?
Thanks. Bro. Brian Psalm 1:1-6

I don't look for any brand name, to me they all look about the same. There are times that I wished I 'd had one on tho, after missing a bite.
I've seen guys with buzzbaits have multiple trailerhooks on, plus many anglers I know use them religiously. I've seen some newer ones that have heckle on them too. ![]() |

The only thing a trailer hook needs is an eye big enough for the point of the main hook to go through. You can buy hooks labeled trailer hooks, but I just bought a bag of trotline hooks years ago and they work fine. I hold them on by using a hole punch on a plastic coffee can lid. Put the trailer hook on the main hook, then take one of the plastic disks, punch the point of the main hook through the center of it and slide it down the bend of the main hook, like this:

When I use a cheater hook, I just use any ol' hook that has an eye too small to fit over the main hook. I bend the barb down, slide it on, then bend the barb back.

thats pretty kewl reb,
my biggest complaint with the old school trailerhooks was that they looked so "clunky"...like a saltwater hook...but I can see that most hook manufacturers has since enhanced the look to be more angler friendly..guess I better try your method and make up some, it'll give me something to think about on these 15 degree nights we are experincing again!..Its snowing again, check out meeka in the snow! ![]() |

A short shanked salmon hook works well for me. I think its called a siwash hook.Sometimes you can get them with a open eye which allows you to install them on the spinnerbait and then close the eye as loose or as tight as you want them.P N J

I'm am also starting to use spinner baits more often, and the only thing I would like to ad, is my preference for the red trailer hooks. I believe they do add to the appearance of the lure. I even like to use Gamakatsu's red EWG hooks for all my soft plastics.

If the fish are hitting a buzzbait hard and still not getting hooked, I just take my pliers and open the existing hook more to create a wider gap instead of adding a trailer hook. You'll hook more fish and you wont hang up as much as if you would at a trailer hook!

The hooks your want to look for are Called Open Eyed Siwash. They are mad by Gamigatsu. I NEVER use a blade or buzz with out one. I think it helps on the shortstrike or bump. Of course 90% of the time when a bass wants a blade they usually completly commit to it. I like "stingers" for the other 10% of the time....

If you do place a extra hook on a buzzbait try a treble hook instead of a reguar trailor. The treble seems to work better in that type bait. Fish2win

If you can find some Gamakatsu G-Stinger hooks, these are pretty good about not hanging up. Just put the string over the trailer hook and then take that loop and pull it over the main hook. They come in different sizes.

I use the strike king trailer hooks not because they are red but because everytime I am looking through the hook section I come out with a bunch of these imbedded in my hand. Get the picture.

That's the reaon for the trailer hooks, Bender-to get the short strikers. In open water the treble hook would work, but like you I fish a buzzbait around cover, and I KNOW I would get it hooked up with a treble hook.

Try it, You will be surprised. The treble of coarse has 3 hooks, put 1 hook up and 2 side ways. They ride fairly close to the main hook giving you 2 additional angles. Since they dont hang out like a single or flop like a single they are extremely snag proof. Fish2win

Recycle coffee can lids as trailer hook keepers by using a hole punch to punch the keepers out. be careful when you push the keeper over the hookpoint so you don't stick yourself.
