Floating Worm Rig

Well, the water is or will be warming up once it thaws (right, JB?

) and this is a rig I have used with a lot of success in the spring. It is easy to rig and easy to fish.

It is almost like a regular weightless worm rig with a couple of modifications.

Start by tying a swivel to your line-not a snap swivel, but a barrel or crane swivel and add a 6-8 inch leader. Then tie on a worm hook that will work with a straight tailed worm like a Trick Worm. I use a 1/0 TruTurn worm hook.

Now to rig it: Thread the worm on the hook just like you would for a weedless worm except-and this is the key-you do NOT want the worm to hang straight-you want to intentionally leave a kink in it.

Cast it around cover and work it with sharp twitches of the rod tip. The kink in the worm makes it spin in the water-the reason for the swivel since it will really twist your line as it spins if you don't use one-and looks alive.

Colors: any color you want, but I've found bright colors like white, pink, lime, and merthiolate work best.

I just watched a video by in-fisherman, the guy was also in Texas fishing this rig with great success. He was knocking them dead with that exact rig. I was lookin to give it a try this spring too. How long have you used it and whats the rig refered to as?

Been using it for several years and have always just called it a floating worm rig. Caught quite a few on this rig.

For the thinking impaired, can you explain the part about leaving a kink in it. Are you referring to when you fish a worm t-rigged (I know you're saying weightless) and how you bury the eyelet back into the worm?

I tried this with the zoom trick worm both in white and bubblegum, and it was so long ago I dont think I really gave it a fair shake, although
I had read how effective it was.
last year two guys I work with used this method with the methylate color pattern and tore them up!

Good pattern for prespawn up here about last april-mid

Reb i have used that trick for years and have come up with big fish off of it (in the 5 to 9lb range) i would recomend that all of you try it, but dont limit yourself to just bright colors only in the spring but bass will kill natural colors as well as darks in summer, fall ,and sometimes winter but you got to go real slow.

Rebbasser, Have you, or anyone ever fish the Danny Joe original floatin worm before ? I never had real good luck with the zoom trick worm. I had better luck with the Gambler brand floatin worm.P N J
