I need help on this one. I just fished my second tournament and caught 2 huge bass the last 20min. of the tournament. I slammed the hook on both. Got them 1/2 way in to the net after a fight and they both threw the hook. What a sick feeling knowing you could have won it or placed 2nd at best.
Hooks are sharp - Gamagatzu. What's goin on? |

Did you actually check the hook to make sure it was sharp? Even good hooks like Gammys occcasionally need sharpening. Or, you may have done everything right and the fish just shook loose. Even the pros lose fish for no apparent reason.

You may have to play the fish out a tad more, plus try putting your rodtip in the water when you see the bass starting to jump up to throw the hook, it should help

how old was your line? old line that has been used alot tends to be stretchy and that could have not let you penetrate the bass's jaw completely. just my 2 cents.

Keep rod tip in the water till ready for the net. Take your time and do not horse them in.

Just replaced the line last month, hooks are very sharp, I'm a little anul about that. I also keep the rod tip in the water when their about to go airborne. I guess the adrenlin kicks in when your looking at a hog that will place good and you don't want to loose it. It's sometimes hard to net fish by yourself when there just a little green yet.
I've fished with guy's that played them a little to long only to loose them as well. Thanks guy's. |

in a tourney use the heaviest line you can get away with..with soft plastics i set the hook 2 or 3 times...i don't play with them.just get them to the boat ASAP.hold the net down in the water and ski the fish into it.although i very seldom use a net.

With 50lb braid you can just shoot them in the boat with a good rod sweep.
This works fine for something ought 1/0 to 6/0 hooks but not with little lures like baby ones or tiny torpedo's Capt Mike
